will it make a big difference to have an A- rather than an A on my transcript? I think an A- is a 3.7, an A is a 4.0, but what is an A+? It's confusing because my school officially does not rank or calculate gpa, but they have a society for the top 10% and obviously they find the top 10% by calculating gpa, but I have no idea how they calculate it.

It depends on the school. At some, there is a difference, and at others, an A is an A.

I'm glad my school doesn't penalize with + or -. A 4.0 equals any grade between 90 -100. Sucks for others with 87 or 88 though, as they would be given a lousy 3.0.

in admissions generally an A-, A, and A+ is regarded as a 4
a B-, B, B+ is a three, and so on.
In college it is calulated differently (usually each number with a corresponding GPA: A+,A=4, A-=3.7,B+=3.3, etc
