I'm currently taking spanish. however, i didnt take spanish my junior year (i did my sophomore yr). so now, since i didnt take spanish for a yr, i am having a tough time and i think i might get a B. Would it affect my chances really badly? would rice think im slacking off?

My GPA (UW): 3.96 or something. i got only one b which was in honors chem...

It is no big deal… RELAX!!! It is easy for me to say, but seriously, it will not prevent you from getting into Rice. I got a B in Calculus first semester of senior year, so I ended up applying with a 3.98 UW GPA. As long as you are around 3.7 and 3.8, you should be fine. I know a lot of people here (myself included) that didn’t have perfect 4.0 unweighted GPAs. Continue to work hard in all of your classes and write awesome essays, and your chances to Rice should be good as long as you have strong extracurriculars.

whoa NYSkins1, what’s with the sarcasm? calm down. im just worrying b/c my gpa is my strongpoint. everything else is mediocre (esp ecs). and rice is a very good school you know

Sigh; this is why I shouldn’t post under the influence.

I got multiple Bs in high school, and while I may have had a better chance of getting in with a higher GPA, those Bs were a result of my committing myself to other activities, which were probably contributing factors towards my getting in. So to answer your question, yes, a lower GPA will lower your chances. But will it make any sort of real difference? Probably not.

I feel horrible now, because rice is my dream school but i have a low gpa…
Im doing my best to do exceedingly well on the sat, but even with an outstanding sat score what chance to i have of getting in with a 3.3 gpa?

I won’t try to address all of your application worries, but I got in last spring with 2 B’s from my Junior year AND a B from my midterm senior grades. It’s not that I was taking superhuman amounts of AP’s and therefore could get away with a few B’s; 3 AP’s in 10th grade, 5 in 11th, and 3 in 12th (with 7 slots for classes every year).

MESSAGE: It’s hard to give specified advice to you, but having a B doesn’t necessarily mean you should give up. Good luck with applications! I remember how trying they could be. =)
