A Better Chance (ABC) Admissions Summer 2020 Cohort

Revision of previous information

The Benchmark was taken in April 2019, before the admit on June 15, 2019. It’s been so long, I forgot the sequence, but everything else after is correct! Sorry for any confusion!

Still waiting for the decision. I have a feeling that they may delay the decision release till July…

Last year the announcement was made on a Saturday, so maybe tomorrow!

@parentken I just received an email to check the application portal next Friday. There were three pdf’s attached. I’m hopeful but wonder if all applicants got that email.

Did you receive an admissions update before they accepted your child in the program?

@lilithmanon, ABC only sent a reminder email of the expectant date and time like a week before. Why, what did you receive?

@“NYCMOML&L” Sounds like the same type of email. Says to check the portal next Friday. It also included PDFs about SSAT prep and a calendar/schedule of summer classes.

@lilithmanon Yeah I did receive the same email about next Friday July 3. The wait is going to feel very long now that the nyc public school just finished up yesterday.

@NYCMOML&L did you receive the decision by email the same date the portal result is up? Or maybe the email arrives earlier ? The wait feels long now that school is over!

@parentken, @ 9 am the day of 6/15, we had to log on to the portal, an attachment will be addressed to the cohort, the first few lines will give the answers you seek. then details of the contract.

ABC parents a recent New York Times article outlined how several students are creating instagram accounts titled Black at (Name of School). I just created a separate post but wanted to include here so you can look for the accounts for the specific boarding schools that interest you and review for some perspective and to reflect on how to prepare your children for this environment. Some of the top ones are Black at Exeter, Black at Andover, etc.

@magnetnh thanks for posting here. My DD is part of this year’s ABC cohort and will be going to an out-of-state boarding school. We were unable to visit due to COVID, but had a welcoming feel from the school. However, looking at their Blackat IG, it definitely makes me think twice if it’s the right decision, especially the posts with recent incidents or naming racist faculty that are still there. Is an elite education worth possibly exposing a child to this? Not sure…I hope ABC addresses this in their summer programming, which we haven’t received news about since the cohort welcome.

Hi all,

Just got the great news that my rising 5th grader was accepted into the 2020 cohort. We are excited!

Child’s quantitative score on the benchmark test was quite low, so I was preparing for a different result.

Glad to have some folks here to commiserate with. Hoping for good results for all today!

Congrats! @MotherinMaryland
My rising 5th grader was accepted too! She also had a low math score but did well on reading. She worked hard on her essay too!

Once you’re a part of ABC how does the process work? Does the cohort meet periodically in person or virtually? And what does the organization help with exactly?

Congrats to your family too, @lilithmanon! I guess the step is the welcome meeting and then SSAT prep. I’m looking forward to getting more information, especially in light of the pandemic.

@MotherinMaryland Thanks for the link!

If your child was recently accepted in the cohort, have you received any communication about the informational sessions and the SSAT prep course?

I understand the info sessions are supposed to be held on 7/8 and 7/10, but have yet to receive an update since the 7/3 acceptance letter.

@MotherinMaryland I haven’t received any communication about the information sessions but I did receive an email about SSAT prep. I already signed her up. Test Innovators is only offering the discounted tuition of $200 for the first 250 students. Not sure if many will be registering since it is optional.

Thanks for the update @lilithmanon. If I recall correctly they are staggering the notice about the SSAT prep course. I definitely plan to sign up my kiddo.

Hopefully we get details about the information sessions soon.
