A Bit About the Admissions Process This Year

Application increase overwhelms review system | The Chronicle

"This year, admissions officers collectively recommended that more than half of the applicants be denied without review in committee, Guttentag said. He added that admissions officers only recommended that 500 to 700 applicants be automatically accepted."

all i have to say is wow

This is the epitome of ridiculousness.

You forgot to write the thing before that…

This happened, when they were “automatically rejected,” AFTER admissions had already looked at applications for 2 different readings for a total of about an hour. They didn’t do it by cutoff!

Good luck getting into your other places though guys.

Here’s part 2:

[Duke balances competing goals in admissions | The Chronicle](Duke balances competing goals in admissions - The Chronicle)

And another article from today with some more stats:

[Duke invites 3,372 to join Class of 2014 | The Chronicle](Duke invites 3,372 to join Class of 2014 - The Chronicle)

3,372 accepted RD from 24,730 applications (excluding deferred ED) = 13.6% acceptance rate
602 accepted ED from 2,040 applications = 29.5% acceptance rate

Overall: 3974 accepted/26770 applications = 14.8% acceptance rate

Targeting class of 1705, down from last year’s 1720 (although the admissions site says last year’s class had 1739).

Anticipated yield = 1705/3974 = 43%

3059 accepted to Trinity, 913 accepted to Pratt.

What happens if more people than they expect end up choosing Duke? Will they expand the school or what…

They convert singles to doubles and doubles to triples. They’ve done it in years past. Pratt increased enrollment by 50 per class a few years ago after building a new freshman dorm. A new dorm on West campus is also in the works…But it’s more a housing restriction than a classroom size restriction.

Chances are, statistical and historical trends will hold. Duke is not all of a sudden going to have 80% yield this year. Low to mid 40% is about right based on recent data.

I have a feeling that as Duke continues to become more and more selective, it’s yield may raise.

"When looking at the academic profile alone, underrepresented minority applicants should compare themselves to the 25th to 50th percentile of the current student body to gauge their chance at admission, and legacy and early decision applicants should measure themselves against the 40th to 50th percentile…

Regular applicants with no special tags should compare themselves to the top 75th percentile of enrolled students, he added."

Interesting to see how much of a factor race/legacy actually plays in the admissions process…

Not to mention the early decision impact. I’ve never seen it so clearly spelled out. Worth a quartile or more.

Well I can imagine the commitment aspect of ED is pretty attractive to adcoms for a few reasons:

1) It’s something that they can get away with because schools that Duke competes with in some cases do the same, just take a look at the Columbia ED numbers.

2) It’s one way to increase the yield, because you lock in those matriculants without having to admit 2-3 per slot. Yield rate has been a factor that differentiates Duke from some of the top tier schools like Penn for a long time in a somewhat negative way. Penn has yield rates of at least 60%+ whereas Duke is in the 40% range.

3) Duke can do it without being accused of Tufts syndrome and the negative reputation that association can bring.

4) ED people are awesome. haha j/k I was a Pratt ED years ago when the T-Rex roamed the earth and the admit rate was still in the 20% range (holy cow 8-| it’s been 4 years already!!!)

Lol, this makes me feel even better for getting accepted as a hookless ORM in the RD round to trinity.

Hahah same here  Yaaaay for Asian females w/no special athletic or artistic talent or rich parents.
