A Bit Indecisive?

Ok so I was suppose to apply to colleges from last month and havn't gotten around to it. Right now I need a place to vent and hopefully get some advice.

Im looking for an art school, seeing as I would feel better being surrounded by the arts instead of liberal arts.
My top choices right now are SCAD and Watkins. I dont have the best grades ever, and I havn't been doing art forever so I dont have an amazing portfolio. Im thinking of going into interior design but as the economy is going down lately Ive been questioning if it will last as a career to help me one day raise a stable family.
SCAD is definatly to expensive for me (as an international student it racks up to 43k a year)
and I do not even know the tuition for Watkins yet as I cant seem to get into contact with anyone.
I was interested in Collins College but the weather there is NOT what i want for sure.
As well as South West Florida College, for the excellent interior program, but their telephone lines are down and the application form. (Is this a sign of a poorly run college?)

One of my biggest questions is this.
Do you think going to a summer program at a college will help me get a jump start and become more sure with my major?

Also should I start by taking common courses in my first semester and declaring my major in the spring? Or is that simply slowing down my time?

Thanks for reading. I really need some guidance and opinions as you all can see.

Summer programs are great, but I'm not sure what is available for students enrolling in the Fall of 09. I did a college preview at SCAD this summer and loved it, I would definitely try to get in there. It is very expensive, but who know what kind of scholarships you'll get.

And I don't think it matters much at most art schools what your major is until your second year, because everyone takes the same foundation classes, so I wouldn't worry about that if you're sure you want to do art of some kind.

Thanks DocRobert, I wanted to go to SCAD's summer program this past summer but apparently I had to be a high school student and I had just graduated and they would not make the exception. :( And Ive been looking for another summer program today and it seems like most are like that. Hopefully I find one.

Any other opinions are loved :)

The weather in Tempe Arizona (collins) is not as bad as you'd expect. You're only there from late August to Early May, easily avoiding the hot temperatures of the summer. You'll have to put up with over 100 degrees around noon time for a bit, but honestly, you won't be outside anyways, you'll be in class. Plus, everything in Arizona is airconditioned (unlike the buildings at Pratt in new york, which would be worse) and a lot of sidewalks in Tempe have misters on them so when you have to walk outside you stay cool.

That said, don't go to collins. They have a 3 year art program which means you won't get as good of an education as you would at another school, many of their graduates leave Collins and can't get jobs in the industry because they don't have the right skills. Then, the ASU kids laugh at them, because Arizona State University has one of the top rated design programs in the country.

That stinks about Collins. But oh well, I had already made up my mind I didn't want to go there anyways. Thanks for the info :)

Decision 1: Im going to apply to Watkins :D Anyone know anything bad about the place?

I don't know much about it at all. Here's some information about tuition and stuff: Watkins College of Art & Design and The Watkins Film School - Nashville, Tennessee - Undergraduate Information

Thanks alot :)

California State Summer School for the Arts lets in seniors who would have been graduated by the time of the program (which is july-august).

Thanks I check it out and will definatly consider it.

Well this is an update, Im in an even worse predicament. Considering how stupid the school I attend now in my country is for allowing just anyone with a highschool degree in, with no max limitations when I went to register after first priority students I ended up with 2 class. English and French. Both of which I dont necessarily need.

Im stuck trying to decide whether to still do them or just drop out for this semester and work, or to apply for a school for January, if still possible. Or to go to Italy for six months and live with family and hopefully find a job there while trying to learn the language. -sigh- Any suggestions or guiding advice?
