A bit of an unusual "Should I take more SAT subject tests" thread

Here's my background in SAT subject tests.

Sophomore year, my mom signed me up for Chemistry and World History, even though I wasn't in AP courses for either, just honors. I didn't study either, so I did extremely poorly (590 and 610, respectively).

This year, I did three different subjects in June, U.S. History, Literature, and Math II. I got 800s on all three.

Several people at my school have been telling me I should take more SAT subject tests, or at least one in science, because it looks good for top colleges. Problem is, I did Environmental Science this year, so there's not really any science test for me to take. Also, I really, really just want to be done with my SAT experience once and for all. What advice would you guys give?

590 on chemistry looks pretty bad.

i've heard colleges only look at your top 3 scores...

so unless you plan on applying to caltech, mit, or engineering schools, you won't really need a science. at least you've got the math.

congrats btw, your may results are amazing scores! i also took ush and lit in may and got a 770 and 780 respectively, haha and i was pretty elated till i saw your scores=)

You've got 3 scores of 800. The most any college will ask for is 3 subject tests; most will ask for 2. I wouldn't worry about retaking anything, unless a college/program you are looking at specifically asks for a science.

You'll submit all your scores...just cause they say they only need 3 doesn't mean they won't look at all of them.

^ That's true, but it's not like the OP can remove those lower scores. They will still show up, but he/she has demonstrated he/she has an excellent command of 3 subjects. The OP's high school transcript can show whether he/she has a command of science courses.

how did you do three subject tests in june?

i think three 800s is fine. although i would consider taking another one if your looking to apply to harvard, princeton, or georgetown (which require three). b/c as far as i've heard the lit subject test lost some its luster when the reasoning test went to three sections.

Congrats, you are done -- you have covered humanities/english and science/math. Colleges may not even see the Frosh scores -- sometimes an intern/clerk writes the highest 2/3 scores on the outside of the admissions folder. But, even if the reader does see them, they'll also see that you took them Frosh year, and most likely will ignore them.

Actually, unluckyone1, all the colleges I've visited (Harvard, Yale, Brown, etc.) have specifically said they only look at the top 3 scores. If they did look at the 2 lower ones (that aren't even that low) they would see that he took them as a sophomore and would probably understand.

You're fine.

Sorry for the mistake, I meant May. I was actually signed up to retake those three subjects in June, since I didn't really have time to study for the ones in May (State championships in debate basically the week before, lots of schoolwork). Guess I don't have to, though.

I'm definitely not a science person. Not applying to Caltech, MIT, any of those. At my school, I tend to get the highest or near-highest grade in my class in math, history, and English, but barely scrape by with an A in science.

I'm pretty sure I won't take any more.

well, if it helps you, NYU said they want as many SAT II's as possible...
i've taken 5 (670, 690, 720, 750, 800 in that order) and will take 1 more

you seem okay though, maybe just retake chem to get it over 600
