So through the practice of 6 practice PSAT test, and 6 full length SAT tests (all from past), i accumulated some questions that I just don’t get. Forgive me if some of these questions are stupid. English is my second language, and I’m trying. Here it goes.

1.Many Americans are passionate about preserving natural resources,(which makes it a fierce political debate.)

the correct answer should be (a situation that makes for fierce political debate). I know that answer makes sense, but can someone tell me why exactly is the original sentence wrong? what grammatical rule is it violating?

2.The valuable stringed a(instruments in) this display, b(all more than) 300 years old, were carefully crafted c(by artisans famous) in their day but d(long since) forgotten. e no error

the answer is no error. I got this wrong becuase i thought d is supposed to be “but had long since been forgotten.” can someone help me out and explain this to me?

3,A poetic form congenial to robert browning was the dramatic (monologue, it let him explore) a character’s mind without the simplifications demanded by stage productions.

The correct answer is (monologue, which let him explore). I chose (monologue that lets him explore), becuase i thought with the 3rd person subject “monologue” the verb “let” should become “lets.” can someone explain to me why this is not the case?

a(Nearly all) of the editors of the magazine b(agree) that of the two articles c(to be published), Fujimura’s is the d(more exciting). e no error

the answer is no error. i think normally we would say “Fujimura’s is the more exciting ‘one’.” In this case, is the “one” implied? or is the gerund sufficient to act as a pronoun?

from practice test 2 in BB…
