Just some things, not particularly important, but I was wondering…

How do people dress to classes and such? I generally dress like crap, most of my clothes just being big, plain, all sweats (I don’t have any jeans or anything), which is what I wear to highschool. I do have plenty of dress clothes as well though, so if something more classy is necessary I’m already set, but I just wondering how I should dress.

Do I need a laptop to take to classes? Affording one’s not going to be a problem, but will I really be able to use it? For any homework or anything like that I have a desktop, so this is something which would be used purely for taking to classes. Also, if I do need one is one of those ones with the touch screen and plastic peice (tablet?) any use?

Will I be informed of anything else I have to do? I hear that I should get an email about a manditory orientation, where I assume I’ll find everything else out. I guess just to any current students, were there any things that you felt they didn’t do a good job of informing you about?

What is the racial make-up of the Engineering program there? Just a general estimate is great.

why would you live at home? michigan has an amazing campus life and you are going to limit yourself by living at home. you arent going to meet the people you would ect ect ect

Hey Qwerty, I am a current student here at UM and will be a sophomore next year.

There is no standard dress code per say here at Michigan. Lots of people wear exactly what you described (sweat pants, sweat shirts, etc.) which is fine. Obviously, jeans are extremely popular and are what most wear during the winter so I'd recommend getting maybe two pairs just for a change. Nothing classy is necessary unless you want to dress up for a social occasion or something like that.

You do not by any means NEED a laptop but in large lectures it is popular to have. However, many students also just take notes on paper. I prefer a laptop just because it is easier to organize and professors will often post their notes online so you can just edit those or follow along during the lecture. Also, it's nice to take to the library or just to have wireless internet around campus when you won't always be at home. I don't really know what you mean by the plastic piece/tablet question.

You will definitely get an email about orientation and you learn a lot there. They do a pretty good job of letting you know what you have to do before you come but just check your wolverine access and UM email every now and then to make sure you aren't forgetting anything after you make your uniqname.

I'm in LSA and therefore not in the Engineering program but I would say the racial make-up is probably a majority of Asians but lots of Caucasians and other races as well. It's not anything like there is one set race in it. Lots of diversity here at UM.
