A Car at Brown

So if my knowledge is correct:

Cars not allowed during freshman year?
and parking spot hard to find ?

its just that i live in texas
and to not have a car is like cutting off someones legs or something

parking spots are nearly impossible to find, but you dont need a car anyway so its no big deal. you can walk to downtown providence pretty easily from campus, everything on campus is within walking distance, and its really easy to take the train to Boston or NY...so there is ZERO need for a car.

There are also lots of busses around campus and around the city. If I'm remembering correctly, they sell cheap bus passes at the bookstore.

Also, parking isn't just hard to find- parking on the street isn't allowed at certain times, including overnight in some places.

how close is the nearest Amtrak or bus station to get to NY? Are there buses that take you to the nearest airport? I want to know the easiest way to get back to NYC. Thanks

If I remember correctly...there is a major bus/train station just on the edge of town, about a 10-15 min walk from campus...or a $3 taxi ride from campus.

There is very little need for a car. And as a fresh, don't bother complicating your life needlessly

Not quite on the edge of town - more like smack dab in the middle. But indeed, there is a train station within walking distance (or a $5.00 cab ride).

Yup, Amtrak is how I get back and forth to Penn Station, even though there are busses that are cheaper they take far longer and always hit traffic to make it even worse. The Amtrak station is a 10-15min walk from Keeney, which is really hte opposite side of the train area (it should be 5-10 from Pembroke) and cost about 4-4.50 for a cab faire.

The only nice thing about a car would be not walking 20mins to a full on grocery store and to go to Best Buy. Outside of that, everything is within 20mins max walking, parking is impossible to find overnight for a regular basis, unless you pay per month for a spot at someone's apartment whihc could be quite far from your dorm or get a spot through Brown which is 98% impossible even as a sophomore. It's not like Texas here, you dont need a car, things are far closer together.

lol yeah thats nice

in texas you konw everything cool is 30 minutes to 2 hours away

and friends live 8 hours away in the same state

20mins max walk, period.

Like cutting of someone's legs? Are you stupid? Not having a car here is more like shooting someone in the face. With a shotgun. Buckshot.

lol yeah actually that might be closer

a car will def be more of a hassle than anything at brown. i would only be appropriate if you lived off campus, which as freshman you will not, obviously. but providence is a sucky place to drive anyway. i read that they have some of the worst drivers in the nation. if you do bring a car, you'll proly find that you never use it, esp with gas prices really high now, although you could win some cool points with your peers. hehe.

I've driven in Providence, it's not bad at all, but I come from Long Island and have driven in NYC so maybe it's not a fair comparison but Providence is very easy to drive around.

But it's cheaper and as easy to walk.
