Did you apply as an early decision applicant? otherwise, NYU is a reach for you. Although your enthnicity might help, it's still bit on the low side.

You have an OK SAT scores
A decent GPA
An OK class rank
average ECs
participated in some pre-college programs, which is excellent by the way.

if your poems and stories are not published, you should then submit them. At least, show them your stuff. They might like yours, and this will only help you. It does not hurt to send those things.

you seem to like a variety of things such as writing, singing, composing etc. NYU seeks students who participate in a number of interesting and unique activies unlike most of the top 40 colleges. but it also favors a student who digs into just a handful of activities. in your case, I think it would be better if you apply to Gallatin. Plus, Gallatin is little less competitive.

where do you live? Your ethnicity and location might help you, yes, I am dead serious.

I would say you have around 50%, if you applied Eearly Decision. Your stats are not really really impressive nor are they terrible...the problem is that, they are dull, very "average". I hope NYU compares you to other Black/Hispanic applicants.

I would say you have around 25%, if you will apply as a regular decision applicant. Your stats are very dull and not so impressive. But if your school is not that of a reputable school or if it's in a ghetto town, that might help you. If you are from a low income family, this might help you. But I see that you are not from a ghetto school, and you do have some money. So...I really think NYU is a reach for you. I am just being realistic. I have tiny bit better stats than yours, but I also have less than 50% chance, in my opinion. (even though I applied E.D., which was a wise move :) )

You never know, just get it out there and wait. You have a good shot.

I really do not know how NYU evaluates Blacks and Hispanics. But your ethnicity does give you some flexibility.

If you are still a junior, I recommend you to read this.

Of course, improve your SAT1 score. It's true that it is always not enough. :)

Take three SAT2s: recommended subjects are
Writing, Math, and the third one is up to you (depends on your major)

Participate in some extraordinary activities such as volunteering abroad, or study abroad through organizations such as www.crossculturalsolutions.com or www.afs.org

Excel your junior year and bring your GPA up as high as you can

Take the most rigorous courses such as Honors and APs

Apply to NYU's 2005 Summer School: Pre-college

etc....

are you a senior who is applying now? then, well, best of luck

I think you should look for schools that are less competitive such as Gallatin or GSP program at Florence.

I think I will take your advice on submitting some poems and stories.
I live in Brooklyn, NY....which probably screws me over.
I think I am going to retake the SATs in January and work my hardest to get a really good ACT score.

Thanks for your help.

I meant to write that I have a 580 V, 460 M on my SAT.

Perhaps you're just not a good test taker, but your record of taking advanced math courses indicates that you are capable of getting far higher than a 460 on the math section of the SAT; you're obviously very intelligent. I would recommend buying the Ten Real SATs book or the Kaplan review book and doing lots of practice tests.

really, you have a good chance. If I were you, I would apply Early Decision. But I think it's too late now. I think you will get accepted right away, though, never 100% sure. You are a very strong candidate. Apply it now! and submit your poems, really, they will help you a lot.

Your stats are not really really impressive nor are they terrible...the problem is that, they are dull, very "average". I hope NYU compares you to other Black/Hispanic applicants.

thats a wee bit prejudice lol

kjayson and Mattiwhatever...just to let you know...NYU evaluates minority applicants in the exact same way as it does white applicants. The only difference being when two applicants with reletively the same stats are being evaluated the minority is more likely to be picked than the uninteresting, bigoted candidate like yourselves.

Next time you wish to make an uneducated, biased statement do your reading on affirmative action...

yea, why don't you calm down? thanks for informing us, we did not know about that. really. now put some pants on and go clean up your room boy.

after all the nice praises about her, you are still criticizing us for being prejudice? i mean, why do you assume that we are? I am also from a minority group. I am a Korean-American. Being honest is not being prejudice against anyone... I do think she has a good shot. what more do you want me to say? and who the hell are you anyway?

umm how am i prejudice? i quote him and call him prejudice, and now im prejudice...

before you go off on flagrant rants, learn to read

was I being prejudice against her or a particular group of people? I do not think so. Well let say if I was as you said, then affirmative action itself is prejudice. As I said before, being honest doesn't mean that I am biased. I am also from a minority group.

and ha-ha mattistotle was saying I was prejudice and now you are saying both of are? lolol mattistotle what do you say about this? lol

sorry dripdrop, I was not being very honest. You have 25% flat.
do not apply to it unless you already applied E.D. you are wasting $65 like I did.

seriously, did you think that you will receive favorable replies when you did not even break 1050? one day I was really bored and took one of the 10 REAL SAT 1 using only my toe and one open eye and still got 900.

you should try this, if you break 900 this way, well, then apply to it. go try it now.

rules...
1. stick your awesome pen between your left big toe and left pinky toe
2. open only your right eye
3. now open the test booklet with your left pinky toe
4. now close the test booklet with your right eye...hint: slightly put your eyeball on the surface, and try to lift the page. it's easier to do if you squirt some liquid out of your eye. it becomes sticky and you will be able to turn the page. hopefully
5. now repeat the process from step 1

i would try to take the december sat if i was you, theres walkins at some schools, itll cost $$$ tho

what is "walkin" is that standby testing thing? I am taking writing again and world history in december...but I really don't want to take the writing again...waht should i do? just get 200 on it? how do you cancel only one subject test when you registered for two?

You can take one then leave and they know

Drip,

First off, your stats are considerably below average for NYU.

However, regardless of whether or not anyone agrees with affirmative action (this isn't the forum to debate that)..you being a hispanic female does help you very much in the process. That being said, your stats are still below average when compared to the average hispanic female at NYU, but the picture does look better for you even if only by a little bit. Also, you've done decent in the summer programs, so that shows you can do college level work...a big positive for your candidacy.

My advice is to apply and take a shot, and try to make every other part of your app (essay, reccs, visit the school, show enthusiasm, etc.) as strong as possible. Every year, people are very surprised they got in, so you never know--I can tell you nothing is certain with NYU admissions because I worked there and am pretty familiar with the process.

Best of luck.

-NYU class of '00

why doesnt anyone ever suggest sleeping with a guy or girl on admissions........
lol

because some of the members of admissions are so old, trust me, some things are just not worth it.

hey guys, what do u think my chances are for NYU RD?
