A change in classes

My brother was recently diagnosed with a chronic bone disease and my mother is already chronically ill. I love my family more than my grades and I belief that I need to make a decision in changing my schedule so I can have an independent study period. This period would allow me to do some of my 5 AP classes' homework so I can devote more of myself to my family during this time of need (which will last for a very long time). I have decided to drop my least challenging class which is a Concurrent Enrollment Chemistry course. 98% of it is organic chem which I already have a background in. I have tried to pull strings as much as I can, but I just have no other option; my family needs me. I am an EA applicant and MIT already has my first term grades which includes this CE class. I would like to know the impact of this decision on my admission process and if I should contact the school soon to inform them of this probable change. Thanks a head of time for your input.

First of all I wish you lots of strength during this difficult time. As long as you explain the situation to the committee, I don't see this being a problem. Just drop a short note to admissions@mit.edu with the information and it will be included in your folder.

Thanks for the encouragement. I am glad that my decision won't have a negative impact. I will contact the admissions office as soon as possible. Thanks for the help and support Mr. Jones.
