I find it hard to believe that every single person in the class was not meeting the professor’s expectations and they all equally deserved a failing grade.

I love that headline. “Is this a millennials problem?”

Here’s what I think (not 100% related to the class):

“Young people are terrible. This world is doomed.”

  • Every old person in the history of ever.

“Old people are terrible. When it’s our turn, there won’t be a world left!”

  • Every young person in the history of ever.

Oh look, another article blaming those gosh darned millenials. I find it literally unbelievable that the class was so dangerous that TAMU-G needed to get a security guard to police it.

I’m sorry, I thought this would be about someone shooting down an entire class. I’m relieved to read that it’s only about grades.

According to the article, the “students” in the class weren’t doing the work, were cheating and swearing at the professor, and he needed security guards at the doors of the classroom. It doesn’t sound like any college class I’ve ever heard about or experienced. I find it hard to believe that the kids in that class were surprised by the outcome. Likewise, this isn’t the professor’s normal MO-- they wouldn’t have chosen to take the class if he had that reputation, and the article surely would have mentioned if he had a history of having a lot of failures.

In my mind, given the limited information in the article, the only thing he did wrong was to fail them prematurely.

And, for what it’s worth, I love teens and young adults. I teach high school, and am honored to be in a profession where I get to deal with such a wonderful group of people, and to help shape them into the adults they’ll be in very short order.

But, by the same token, I think that part of that learning experience, part of that growth, is learning that actions have consequences. These kids, apparently, hadn’t yet learned that lesson. Perhaps they have now.

So this isn’t a story about “those gosh darned millennials.” This is a story about a particular group of them giving the rest of you a bad name because of their poor behavior and lack of preparation for a college class.

@bjkmom I was more talking about Yahoo’s headline for the article than the actual class. Perfect example of yellow journalism.
