Hello, I am a senior and I am applying to various colleges. Recently, I have been trying to find schools that do not look at SAT Writing scores, since my writing score is significantly less than my other two scores. Unfortunately, I have not found any reliable lists of colleges that do not look at SAT writing, so I have created my own and with your help, we can make the college search process a little easier for those who have an SAT Writing score much better or worse than the overall score.

I am compiling a list of colleges that, during my search, have not posted Writing in their statistics on their own website or have stated that they do not look at SAT writing. I will make a list of colleges and provide evidence. If you have found a college that does not look at writing, please post it on this forum and provide a link of how you found this data. Please use the official website of the college., and not a college information aggregate like about.com. I will try as best I can to update the list.

Wow this is just this is amazing ( yet at. The same time depressing the writing section is my second best)
Do you know anything of the ACT exam essay with the reading writing score and how admissions look at them

Most California State Universities admit by a “eligibility index” formula incorporating SAT CR+M (not W) or ACT.

Cal Poly SLO uses its own “multi-criteria admissions” system but does not specify whether or not its use of SAT includes the W section (ACT can also be used).

Texas public universities admit a portion of their class on the basis of class rank in a Texas high school (having taken the specified college-prep course pattern) without considering test scores at all.

Open admission community colleges also trivially fulfill the criteria of not using SAT W for admissions.

When I visited the Cornell, my friends and I had the opportunity to talk, to the assistant dean that gave the information session for arts and sciences. I asked about how they place an emphasis on their required writing seminar classes but dont look at the SAT writing section. She told me that although they will not place as much emphasis on the writing part of the SAT as they do on Critical Reading and Math, they still see it so it does have “some” weight. I assumed that they will see something wrong with a really low score in writing or like a really high writing score but won’t give it as much weight as a math or cr score. Now I am confused.

It may be different for every school within Cornell, since after all this is Cornell Engineering,a college that does not used so much intensive writing as the Arts and Sciences.

A Comprehensive List of Schools That Do Not Look at SAT Writing (Incomplete)

For most colleges, you can put links to the common data set which includes information on whether the SAT-W score is used for admissions, placement, or neither.

Many moderately selective state universities admit by formula. If the formula does not include SAT-W, then it is irrelevant to the admission decision.

There are also cases where a portion of the class is admitted by formula not including SAT-W, while those who miss the formula threshold are evaluated in some other way (which may or may not include the SAT-W; see the common data set):

Texas public universities: top 10% of Texas public high school class is automatically admitted to non-Austin campuses (Austin sets a higher automatic threshold, usually top 8% or 9%).

All CSUs except SLO: see [CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - Calculate Your Eligibility Index](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU) . This eligibility index, which does not use the SAT-W, is used to rank-order applicants for an impacted major or campus to determine admission; a minimum of 2900 (in-state) or 3502 (out-of-state) is needed for admission to a non-impacted major on a non-impacted campus.

Note that automatic admission based on a threshold Regents’ Admission Index (excluding SAT-W) admits only a portion of the class, similar to how class rank only admits only a portion of the class at Texas public universities.

In general, looking at section C8.C of the school’s common data set should reveal how the SAT-W is used, if it is used.

over two years late on this thread, but whatever. William and Mary do not look at them either. I visited them this spring, and that’s what they said.
