A Conundrum... Help please

I don't like to peddle my own school, but have you considered Duke? It's quite strong in both BME and econ, and it has a good med school placement rate. My top two choices for undergrad were Chicago and Duke- I chose Duke, but Chicago's my top choice for grad school. In my opinion, I'd apply to Chicago even though they don't have BME. You may change your mind, and it's nice to have plenty of options in April. You may want to look over their biology offerings.

http://www.bme.duke.edu/

lol i did consider duke for a while and i heard about rice's reputation as a overlooked school. However, I must say I'm used to a) the semi-reasonable (as in cold winters) of Ohio and i would rather be stuck in a blizzard up north then in the sweltering heat of the south and b) life in the midwest. I can't really go to California, for example without being uncomfortable b/c of the mannerisms I mean its always going to be pop to me, not soda. lol

And duke eventually fell into the pile along with HYPS... schools that are super-prestigious, but too prestigious making a even a typcial "good" student feel overwelled by the next politicians, CEO's and geniuses of America. That and I dislike JJ reddick and duke basketball in general (sorry) Nothing against duke though, a very very good school and I know some ppl there but just not my type of college.

Thanks alot tho.

you would not be in school during the summer, hence there would be no sweltering heat in much of the south during the school year.

OK last question... Brown. Yes or No? For me that is.

I would discourage you from looking at Chicago, Brown and Northwestern and encourage you to look at Rice and WashU.

Chicago, Brown and Northwestern and encourage you to look at Rice and WashU.

i got into all of these and Cornell, with the exception of Brown

Antonius, I’d suggest that you take a look at Williams. No engineering but excellent academics – sciences, economics etc. Very strong track record for getting their graduates into top medical schools. Very good research opportunities. They especially like multifaceted kids – tennis plus piano is a good fit – and while still liberal are not as overwhelmingly left leaning as some of the other schools on your list. Plenty of snow.

I’d also look at some of other LACs like Amherst, Hamilton, Kenyon. Dartmouth, while not an LAC, has a similar ambience.

Your GPA and MCAT score are both very important to medical school adcoms, but so are recommendations and research/internship opportunities. This is where the LACs really excel because the style of education is so personal.

Also, please clarify your financial needs. Will you qualify for need based aid or will you require merit aid? If the latter, you’ll need to build your list with that in mind.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
