Is there HD on campus cable network?

Is there any HDTV over-the-air reception?
2a. Is there a good reception of local channels?

I’m in sixth. Thinking about getting an HD tuner for my computer, but wondering if it would make sense right now.

I know for a fact there isn't HD on campus cable. At that point, there's no point in getting an HDTV tuner (ie. spending the extra $$$) because even if you get OTA HD reception, the content will suck. You'll get local channels like ABC and crap, but you know all the best stuff is cable-only.

Hes got a point.. but on the other hand if you get a simple lcd hd tv for like 200 bucks on craigslist.. then you could enjoy a dual monitor for pc or mac, hd gaming with xbox360 or ps3, dvi inputs which allow you to connect optional digital video like blueray and such, and plus you get a really cool nice looking tv.. and i think ucsd pragramming has HBO... not hd though... but hey HBO is good enough...

TV's (even HD ones) hardly make good computer monitors. If you get a small one, the TV will likely only display 720p and not 1080i/p, and as a result, it won't have more than 1440x900 pixels, which isn't that much better than most laptop screens. Not to mention, it'll look even worse because you get less pixels per inch than you would with a true computer monitor.

Yeah ..... I got a lcd hd tv "19" and i get perfect picture and 1080 i and I havent seen any inconsistencies with doubling it as a dual monitor...I think it alll depends on the specs and such.... so be wise if you get one..... make sure it can handle 1080 i.....

How much is this tuner you are looking to buy? Plain ole antennas can give you HD channels too.

On the other hand, about ucsd not having hd content, my hdtv had a tuner built in, and I plugged in a coaxial cable into it and got hd local channels. We hadn't even ordered hd channels but for some reason, the tv was able to scan for them through a regular ole coaxial cable.

I remember reading from someone here that there was no HD cable at the school, which is probably why Filabusta said that. As for tuners and antennas, they're two totally different things. Tuners convert the over-the-air signal, and you need a HDTV-specific tuner to watch OTA HDTV. Antennas are just the components that receive the OTA signal, and yes, any antenna can receive an HDTV signal.

Also, while HD signals can be transferred through coax, are you sure it was an HD signal (ie. did you see a difference)? Because HD tuners are often backward-compatible and can receive regular NTSC content as well.

So there is for sure no HD on cable? What is the cable service provider?

I'm looking at a dual ATSC/NTSC tuner, specifically at Hauppage HVR-1600. I was hoping to get some OTA HD content, as well as some QAM HD content from cable. According to some law I don't exactly remember, cable companies have to transmit unscrambled local channels, which basically gives you free local OTA HD over cable. I can find it for about $120.
