A couple of things about scholarships...

This is the first year that we seem to "qualify" for a small amount of need-based aid, and it is interesting. After the first round of merit scholarships, suddenly a letter comes announcing more money.

What's interesting is that the schools seem to sort of gloss over which money is automatically renewable, and, more importantly, which money isn't. Now, a parent "in the know" realizes that the need-based part (which might have to be gleaned from the context) is dependent on yearly FAFSA. But frankly I don't think in either of the letters we've gotten so far that is very clearly spelled out. So, I wonder how many families are pretty upset that second or third year, when circumstances change, and suddenly their aid is decreased?

Secondly, now I can see why some CCers receive "millions of dollars" (OK, maybe not millions...) in merit aid. I bet there is still a great deal of confusion over which awards are truly "merit" and those that are need-based - especially in the instance of things called "scholarships."

Third it certainly creates a roller coaster this time of year! Schools rise and fall daily. lol

Anyway, those are just some random thoughts.

When DD got her financial aid packages the first year, I emailed her favorite college and asked for information on how the package would change each year. I strongly suggest that anyone with questions about financial aid packages inquire via email (then you can print out and store the answers for future reference) as opposed to asking over the phone. My memory just ain't what it used to be, and 5 minutes after speaking with a F.A. rep I probably would have been asking myself, "Did he say that the there will be no loans next year, or no loans unless she requests them, or no unsubsidized loans?" Getting it in writing means that you can clarify your questions for yourself - and weed out any ambiguities in the way you phrase your questions. Just my advice. :)
