Hello,

I'm currently a sophomore in engineering at an out of state school. Well, I am very unsatisfied with the education here, so I was considering transferring to a UC. So I'm wondering, is it possible for me to attend a california community college for a year, and then transfer into a UC? More specifically, I currently have a 3.0 gpa. What are my chances at a school like UCSB if I attend a california community college first?

You should make sure you’ve completed 60 units before you transfer to a UC. If you bring your GPA up a little at a CC, you can do it, especially with a TAG. Someone who knows more about going from a 4-year to a 2-year will be able to better assist you, such as an academic counselor, or perhaps someone here.

Your chances of getting into a UC are low if you do go to a California Community College (after having 2 years of out of state), since you’ve already probably fulfilled all of the prereqs and lower division coursework. This being said, the fulfillment of TAG (Transfer Admission Guarentee) cannot be complete since your coursework has been already fulfilled elsewhere (this is depending if you’ve done all the major prereqs and already have fulfilled your GE’s). Some colleges such as UCI that have TAG will have you ineligible to be given this contract because you already have 4-year institution coursework.

If you attended a California Community College first instead of the out of state school you’re attending. Then you would have a greater chance or guarenteed chance (TAG) into UCSB.
