A D in a Non a-g? (Or is it still a-g?)

Hello, I’m currently a senior in high school and I’m struggling to bring my grade in AP Calc AB to a C or higher (I currently have a D+). Since I’ve already passed 3 years of the required math, would Calc be considered a NON a-g/elective? The rest of my classes are fine and I’ll still have just enough credits to graduate.

UCs are obviously out of the question and I’m only planning on going to the CSU San Jose State. My unweighted 10-12 grade gpa is ~3.6-3.7 (12 grade at the moment is 3.3 because of my failing class), my SAT scores are 600+ in each section and I exceed the impaction for the major I applied for. (Unfortunately though I got a C in an AP in my junior year, but it wasn’t related to the major I want to go into). Will these help compensate for my D and will I still have a good chance of being considered/ getting in?

Either way I’m still going to try my best in my calc class, but the a-g/non a-g thing has been bothering me a lot and some certainty will take some of my stress off in case I actually do fail it…
Thanks.

Although you passed 3 years of Math, AP calculus is an a-g course. You will have to contact SJSU directly, but if you are accepted the provisional admission contract states you need to pass all a-g courses with a C or higher, no D’s or F’s. It will be up to SJSU and any other CSU if they feel you have completed the Math requirement and will still accept you without passing calculus. I suggest you get a tutor and try very hard to get that grade up. A C in the 2nd semester will validate a D in the 1st semester but hopefully it will not come to this.

I’m unsure about when to contact the school and what exactly to contact them about. Am I supposed to call or email them explaining my situation?

Right now just work on getting that grade up. If you are accepted and you do get a grade below a C then you would have to contact the schools on your next step.
