A "D" in Spring Semester Before Transfer to UCSB

I have been accepted into UCSB for Economics and I have a 3.8 GPA. My only problem is I might end up with a “D” in my Calc 2 class and it is on my assist page. If I get do get a “D” will I be rescinded or Will I just have to retake in the summer? Can I just take it at the University rather than the summer? I will have higher than a 3.0 GPA for the Spring semester because I will definitely get an A in my other Spring classes. Thank you.

On your acceptance page, there should be a condition of admission, I believe if you get a grade lower than a C in a major prep course, then you have a chance of getting rescinded.

I am not majoring in Economics but I believe Calc 2 is an important class for Econ majors. So, this might be a problem. You should contact them as soon as possible. And, maybe, getting a W would be better than getting a D.

ANother thought:

  1. Has the withdraw deadline passed?
  2. Talk to your adviser about possibly withdrawing
  3. But only if you would stay full time and it would not mess up transferring

@bopper
I could still withdraw, the date to take a “W” is April 15th. The reason I don’t want to take a “W” is because I still have a chance to get a “C”. Will I not get rescinded if I take a “W” ?

UCs have specifically rules/regulations so I couldn’t begin to answer your question. Don’t do anything on the advice of me.

I can give you these tips to get your C:

A “D” would likely get you rescinded. From the ASSIST page, it says that Calculus 1 and 2 is required for admission with “no individual grade lower than C”.

As this is a required course for admission, a “W” would also likely get you rescinded. You really need a C in this course, how hard will that be? Can you approach your professor to ask for extra help while also letting him know your situation? If you’re willing to put in extra work, there may be wiggle room there.

Damn, thank you guys for the advice. I guess I’ll just have to grind to get a C.

Get a tutor tomorrow!!!

The best advice is to do what others have suggested, get a tutor and do anything else possible to pass the class. However if you do not pass the class then there is nothing automatic about retaking the class. The most likely result is your admission is revoked unless you work with admissions to modify your conditions of admission.

I think you should reach out to admissions now although of course you need to do your best to pass the class. The admissions office is there to help, they’re not going to cancel your admission because you called them. As they wrote in the UC Davis alumni magazine a few years ago

Why do you think you’ve done poorly thus far? If it’s simply that you haven’t been putting enough time into the class, then you should be able to get your grade up by committing more time to it each week. If you have been putting time and effort into it and you’re still having trouble understanding the material, then your grade is likely to remain a D. You should withdraw in this latter case.

But first call admissions to hear what they have to say. Ask if they would allow you to retake the class in the summer.
