I was wondering how most berkeley students spend their day. How much do you study? How much do you stay in the dorms ? what's the dating scene like ? What do you do for entertainment? Where do you go on weekends?

Obviously, each of you spend your time differently and do different activities. Pls do share it with me. I'm an international and i want to have an inkling of what people around me would be like in berkeley.

It really depends on the individual. Personally, I study A LOT. After class, I spend about 5 hours each week day studying (except Fridays), then I have some club stuff here and there. The rest of the time I spend doing nothing/hanging out with friends. I usually do most of my fun stuff on Fridays. That includes movies, karaoke, etc. On the weekends, I usually spend an additional 6hrs/day studying, unless I have club stuff to do. However, I think I am an extreme example, most people don’t study as much as you do 'cause they are smarter or don’t care quite as much about their grades.

it depends on how disciplined you are and how high you want your GPA to be. also, it depends on how involved with clubs you are (they can take up a lot of time if you choose to become very involved), and who you know (i.e. what do your friends like to do? going to SF takes up a whole day, vs. just sitting around and watching a movie at night or something like that).

Well here was a typical Thursday for me last semester, my busiest day of the week:

7:45 - Wake Up, Eat breakfast (sometimes)
8:45 - Catch up on studying for the day
11:00 - Poli Sci Class
12:30 - Lunch
1:00 - Philosophy Discussion
2:00 - Math
3:30 - Home, quick shower or break
5:00 - DeCal class
6:30 - Quick dinner
6:45 - Watch Cal Basketball game (first part of semester) or home.
After game or class - study until I get my work done, then bed (usually no later than midnight)

As I mentioned, this was my busiest day, so if you are wondering how busy you will be this is about the max.

On weekends, I usually did something non-school related on Friday night and Saturday (more often than not related to Rally Committee, my biggest extra curricular activity) and then on Sunday buckled down and studied or did schoolwork. But the thing about college is that there really is no set routine. It varies, a lot.

no offense but the schedule above doesn’t seem like the most rigorous to begin with. try asking a berkeley pre-med what their schedule is like (preferably one with a high gpa and studies a lot) to get a picture of a worst case scenario.

That’s true. I should have mentioned that am a poli sci and/or philosophy major. The above schedule was the most hectic (not necessarily most stressful or day when I did the most work) day of the week for me personally. It will vary for other majors and people.

I’m premed mcb, I don’t really think it’s necessary to study that much honestly…
here are the classes i’ve taken so far: math1a/1b, chem1a/3a/3al, bio1b, sociology3ac, and history 136 (for fun!!). I’ve already taken bc, so 1a and 1b were not too bad (my teacher in hs was good, we already learned the epsilon delta proofs which EVERYONE was complaining about). Chem 1a was seriously easy. Bio 1b was not a class that required studying for much, actually I would think for the way the questions/class was designed anyway who studied a ton for it was just wasting their time because it was all applied conceptual - either you understand the concepts or you don’t. Chem 3a was the hardest of course, but the curve is so generous and the teachers are fairly good. Not trying to brag or seem trivial…I just think people should be maybe a bit less pretentious and relax a bit. You CAN do well not studying 24/7 as long as you keep your wits about you, and have a little confidence.
Here was my typically daily schedule on an average day second sem (cuz it was harder I guess).

9 AM wakeup (haha, skipped bio lecture), shower
10 AM lecture
11 AM go to office hours
12 NOON finish up prelab in chem library, go to computer lab and check callisto
1 PM LAB
3:30 PM (lab ends, got out early!!), go back to the dorm
3:30 - 6:30 relax at the dorm, check email, watch TV
6:30 Dinner at Cafe 3 with floormates
7:00 - 9:00 watch america’s next top model/gossip girl/ or just hangout with floormates
9:30 start homework due next day, or day after
11:00 take a break, hang out with floormates more, or watch videos on tv
1:00 do some more homework
2:30 Sleep

As you can see, i don’t really do that much STUDYING during a normal weekday. If it were perhaps a week or so before midterm, instead of homework and some of the relaxing time, i would get in significantly more studying, maybe adding to my “work” time by 3-5 hours.
My point here is, basically you CAN get a good gpa, but still HAVE FUN and give yourself time to enjoy college. You CAN still be a doctor and have a life. Maybe it’s not fair of me to say this, as i’ve only completed my first year, but as such my advice to incoming freshman for THEIR first year would be: College is a once in a lifetime experience, so make the most of it. Do lots of things, learn a lot, and enjoy life. :)

hey snow-phoenix… if ur premed, how did u go straight to Bio1B, didnt u have to take Bio1A… if so, could i also test out of Bio1A with AP Bio scores even when i am premed?

@ wannabestudent: if you’re premed, you are required to take bio 1a and bio 1b, regardless of AP scores. Also, you usually take bio 1b before bio 1a because 1b is easier, but it doesn’t really matter.

730 talk to corporate like a boss
900 approve memos like a boss
1000 remember birthdays like a boss
1200 hit on deborah like a boss
1201 …get rejected like a boss
100 eat a bagel like a boss
No doubt.

haha. Really. everyone varies okay? 75% of my floormates were EECS and they just basically went to class, screwed around, went to dinner, study sleep. I mean i would think that’s it for pretty much everyone (substitute screwing around with studying for those hardcore students).

Here’s what my Wednesdays looked like last semester (pretty light on classes, but heavy on time commitments):

8AM-830AM: wake up, eat breakfast, get ready for class
830AM-9AM: walk to campus
9AM-12PM: work in research lab
12PM-1PM: graduate seminar
1PM-2PM: undergrad lecture
2PM-2:30PM: grab a quick lunch
2:30PM-5PM: work in administrative office
5PM-6PM: undergrad section
6PM-6:30PM: walk home
6:30PM-7:30PM: unwind/do nothing
7:30PM-12:30PM: study, read, hang with roommates, eat dinner, exercise
12:30PM: bedtime

Every weekday I was basically occupied between 9-5pm with about an hour’s break in between, but 20 hours per week were spent working two different jobs so it’s not like it was all time spent in class. I had anywhere from 2-5 hours of homework/studying/reading per night, and more on weekends, but even with what I consider a relatively heavy schedule I still had time for fun on weekends and some weeknights.

Keep in mind that the amount of time Cal undergrads spend on things merely reflects their own personal priorities and values and shouldn’t be taken as an indicator of any “standard” level of anything. I know people who devote much more time to academic ventures than I do, and of course I know people who spend much less time studying/going to class. A lot depends on how efficient you are with the things you do, and how motivated you are as well.
