A Day in the life of a Mechanical Engineer

I'm curious as to what all a mech.e does. I know it's a broad field but any insight will help me!

I’m curious too…I’m debating between EE and ME.

I can’t decide which one would be more fun and less boring to do!!! They both seem like fun.

I am not an engineer but this is a nice site my S and I found when he was first exploring engineering careers:

[Sloan Career Cornerstone Center: Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine](Career Cornerstone Center: Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine)

Toasting in roll bread…

Here’s a pretty good description of MechE from Michigan Tech:

[Mechanical Engineering: What is it?](What is Mechanical Engineering? | Michigan Technological University)

What about Electrical Engineering? what do they do besides stop lights and power poles?

a) This thread is three years old.
b) I sincerely hope you are joking. Please do a Google search.

Give the newbie a break! Rule of thumb: You are better off starting a new thread than resurrecting an old thread. Also for questions such as yours, a google search is best. I think you may find sites that have general information on that but you can also find forums that are frequented by working engineers.

A day in life: Answering phones, Pulling POs, pricing equipment…

I can tell you what I did as a mechanical engineering intern, which was pretty close to what a real mechanical engineer would do.

My day started at 8:15 with a staff meeting. We would get any updates on projects or tasks to complete. Then, I would go to my desk and work on one of several design projects I was working on at any given time. I used Excel, MATLAB, SolidWorks, Unigraphics, etc.

However, I wasn’t tethered to my desk. Throughout the day, I would go to various meetings. I frequently went to our manufacturing shop to talk with the engineers/technicians there and work out any problems we might be having. I also went to our lab a lot, to run experiments on our product. I also interacted a lot with supplier and customers, troubleshooting issues and discussing the product.

My days were always full, but I enjoyed the work so it went by fast! I hope this helps!
