A deep, sob-story vs. A Success/Good, but less significant essay

I can't decide if I want to talk about my family and how nobody has a high school degree and how we immigrated here from a third world country or if I want to write about one of my extracurricular activities that I feel very good about.

I really don't know what to do. As much as I want to write about my family, I don't think it will reveal a lot about me; however, an essay on one of my activities wouldn't be as significant.

Please help me!

Thank you...

Based on some of the essays I read so far I think a lot of people write about their families and being a first gen and stuff like that. But if you think you can write about your family in a way that’s original and will make you stand out, I say go for it.

Just make sure you write about them in relation to YOU. As in, what effect they had on your development as a person.
