I am a soon to be college freshman who has aspirations to go to medical school in the future. However, right now I am stuck between deciding to major in biology or computer science. I want to major in something other than biology for in case I cannot go to medical school. Although right now, I am liking the idea of majoring in computer science right now because I love computers and also due to the fact of the growing technological influence on the global job market. However, my dreams of becoming a doctor far exceed that of my interests regarding computers. So what do you guys think I should major in? I feel biology will give me a strong background knowledge when it comes to the MCATs and for succeeding in medical school, but a computer science degree will open many doors for me in the future as well. Also, are bio majors in great demand as computer science majors are? Which degrees will generally be more practical in apply for jobs excluding medical prodessions?

You can major in computer science and take pre-med courses alongside.

Biology majors have poor job and career prospects at the bachelor’s degree level – it is a very popular major, at least partly because a lot of pre-meds major in it (but do not get into any medical school). So the supply of biology graduates is large compared to the number of biology-specific jobs.

You might consider a major in what is commonly called Bioinformatics. It is part biology, part computer science. I am providing you a link to the program at the University of Iowa. Other schools may call the major something else but many are developing programs as it is a growing field.

I was recently surprised to see that there is a “Computer Science with Pre-med track” at my son’s college. I think it’s a fine idea if you’re interested in that area. It would give you a fall-back career if you decide that med school isn’t for you…

Graduating with a bio degree isn’t going to get you nearly the employment opps as a comp sci major.
