a different approach.

hey guys,

Im a economic major and I'm applying as a fall 09 transfer.
I have my heart set on uc berkeley and ucla
the dilemma is that since the admissions rate for ucla is 17% and for ucberkeley its even lower. I'm thinking of applying as a psych major. and then double major when i get into one of those two schools. Is that smart? I mean, psychology majors don't have alot of prereqs AND alot of the prereqs fulfill the IGETC. that way i'll definately have a better chance of getting in. is that smart?

feedback would be much appreciated. thankssss!!!

You have PM.

For LA, you have to be admitted directly into the econ/biz-econ major. Its possible for berkeley i believe. I know people that got in as PEIS and are trying to switch to Econ but they have to keep up extraordinary grades in their first semester econ classes.

jetforce: check your pm
anybody else?suggestions? can i go into berkeley as a philosophy major and then double major in econ?i know im gonna try as hard as i can to get good grades in the first semester

bump, someone who knows please help

is your current gpa below 3.5?

nope. it's around 3.75.which is nost close to the average admission GPA for berkeley at all.

um actually that puts you at the 75th percentile <a href="http://students.berkeley.edu/admissions/transfer.asp%5B/url%5D">http://students.berkeley.edu/admissions/transfer.asp</a> you're just below average for econ.

I guess thats fine if you reallllly want a degree in psych too. However, since it is not a guarantee that you'll be able to switch to econ or double major, how are you gonna feel if you are stuck with psych?

Personally I would just apply for econ so I won't have to jump through all these hoops.

what if your current gpa is a 3.55 and going slightly downward ;oo

Okay I'm gonna be the a-hole and say it: what if you guys stop trying to find your way around (cheat) the system and just do things the right damn way?

if you have a 3.55, you are way below the 25th percentile meaning 75+% of the students that were admitted have better gpas than you

edit: also, i agree with what grey says. If you aren't competetive enough to get into berkeley econ then you probably won't be able to handle the coursework once you get to berkeley either. Even if you get in as an Econ major only 2/3 of the pre-econ transfers actually get to declare Econ. You'd be competing with all the CCC transfer with 4.0's that are pre-econ and chances are you won't get into the major.

UCLA- no. and no.

Get accepted into ECON. it is not impossible but very close to it to declare econ as a double major if you where not accepted into econ to begin with.

Also, look at UCLA admission by major.

Psych is impacted at UCLA and a ton of people apply to that major so you have to be exception to get into that as well. ..

UCLA ECON does not like backdoor entrants.
I was Math/ECON and tried to change just to Econ and theywouldnt let me do it, and I tried a lot.

what if you already have the accouting 1-3 prereqs done along with the others but a low gpa.. still apply to econ?

If you want to major in ECON, apply to ECON and risk getting rejected.

If you want something like econ, apply to Math/Econ and do a minor in ac****ing and count on being accepted as Math/Econ is much easier to get accepted into.

(i was not personally trying to do eco, i actually wanted math /econ but then wanted to change because it had too many courses and i wouldnt have been done with econ faster than math econ)

If your GPA is low then most likely you will not get accepted into ECON- if there is no other major you are willing to graduate with from UCLA then consider another school.

econ and psy are both capped major in berkeley. u gotta declare major in the first sememster. In term of econ, u need to complete stat21 and econ 100a before u declare major (first sem) It's hard to have a psy econ double major...

Information on major changes for UCLA:

Psychology:
"Listed below are the lower division preparation courses for the major. You
should complete all preparation courses prior to transfer. All courses must be
taken for a letter grade. Transfer students must be admitted as Pre-Psychology
majors in order to major in Psychology. Students originally admitted under other
majors will not be permitted to change their major to Pre-Psychology or
Psychology or to double major in Psychology. For more information regarding this
major and UCLA's transfer selection process, visit UCLA Psychology and
<a href="http://www.admissions.ucla.edu.">www.admissions.ucla.edu.</a>"</p>

Economics:
"Listed below are the lower division preparation courses for the major. THIS
MAJOR IS HIGHLY SELECTIVE. ALL preparatory courses should be completed by the
spring term just prior to transfer. All courses must be taken for a letter
grade. The calculus course requirements should be met as early as possible.
After transfer to UCLA, students may not change their major to Economics if they
were originally admitted to a major outside the Department of Economics. For
more information regarding this major and UCLA's transfer selection process,
visit UCLA Department of Economics and <a href="http://www.admissions.ucla.edu.">www.admissions.ucla.edu.</a>"</p>

Information at Cal:

Psychology:
Heres a link to FAQs about applying to the major: <a href="http://psychology.berkeley.edu/undergrad/transferfaq.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://psychology.berkeley.edu/undergrad/transferfaq.pdf</a> . Further information - "Note that ALL courses taken to satisfy the major requirements must be taken for a letter grade.

To have psychology courses taken at another university (including EAP) considered for major credit, please submit the Exception to the Major Petition form.

All students who apply to the major and meet the following criteria are guaranteed admission.
1) A grade point average of above 3.2 in the lower division/prerequisite courses. NOTE: We do not roundup. Students with lower GPAs may apply but are rarely admitted.

2) Declare the major prior to the accumulation of 80 semester units (or in the case of transfer students, declare the major during their first semester at Berkeley)

3) Submit the application to the department by the posted deadline

If any of the above criteria are not met, students may still be admitted to the major; however, it is not guaranteed. Please understand that applications will not be processed until ALL prerequisite courses are complete and final grades have posted. This may mean that you will not technically be admitted to the major until the beginning of the following semester. Be sure to place your name on the waitlists for courses you wish to take the following semester as you will be enrolled from the waitlist ONCE your application has been approved--or you may register directly in the course during Phase II, whichever comes first."

Economics:
Prospective Majors
That should answer your questions.

In reality you might not be able to double major at Cal or UCLA because of their strict requirements. At Cal is may be possible if you major in econ then apply for the psychology major (if you apply during the first semester after transfer and you meet the requirements you'll definitely be in the major, but if you don't apply after the first semester then you can still attempt to apply for the major although its competitive).

Hope this helps

it does, thanks! actually I went up to UCB and talked to an admissions counselor. She told me that its actually almost impossible to double major in economics if you didn't originally apply under that major. so i guess that answers my question. so I have another question:

If i want to double major in majors like bioengineering or engineering majors that's not impacted, Can i do that?
