A difficult situation! Seeking advice!

I didn't know where to post this topic but it seems to fit well in this section of the forums. I have a rather difficult situation, and I hope you guys are able to guide me in the right path.

I graduated high school exactly a year ago to this date, graduated with a 2.5 GPA which is okay but enough to get accepted to a number of colleges and hopefully some SUNY (State Universities of New York) schools. Now my situation becomes more difficult, I joined the army during my junior year of high school. My senior year became a bit tense due to personal issues and the army on my back hence the 2.5 GPA.

Now to where I am a year later. In a last minute decision, I enrolled into DeVry College of New York, they pretty much accept anybody, since I was away for the summer due to training with the army, I never got the time to be serious about applying to college, so I took whatever could take me in. So the past year I have done nothing in DeVry. I have taken up a couple classes, but the military made it harder to make classes at points so I misses a lot of classes the first semester. Later on I get medically discharged due to a bad knee.

Now here come the second semester, I feel I will do better and boost my GPA in hopes of getting into a SUNY school or St. John's University. Unfortunately the loss of 2 family members and looming family troubles made school more difficult, adding insult to injury, I was learning nothing in DeVry.

Now to bring this to an end, I pretty much have nothing on my transcript, dropped classes and failed classes. It's pretty terrible for me. My question, is it possible for a fresh start? Is it possible to apply to apply to a SUNY school or St. John's as a freshman. I don't know what to do and hopefully I can get some advice here. I don't wanna apply as a transfer student as you can obviously see from my situation, I don't feel comfortable walking up to an admissions adviser and sharing my story as if I'm looking for pity. What can I do? Is it possible to get accepted to any of these universities? Can I be a freshman once again? What steps can I take?

I'm hard working, I can strive when I put my mind to it, I just had a rough year, a series of bad luck. Things have settled and I want to start working hard before life decides to put me down once again, which I will be prepared for. Just want some advice.
Thanks in advance for any advice I receive!

Wow… I’m sorry to hear about your family troubles and loss:\ You seem like a strong person just from this though. Which is why you shouldn’t feel as if you’re seeking pity. These are the kind of stories that admissions officers need and want to know so they can get an idea of who you are. They also will want an explanation for the poor grades. You don’t have any particularly promising accomplishments academically speaking, but if you’re applying to a college that requires you to write an essay, describe your situation in it or see if an interview with an admissions officer is possible. You really should explain why you were unable to excel academically in the past. Good luck:]

I’m only a high school junior…this is all from personal opinion and research I’ve done on colleges and admissions.

You have a good point about not feeling pity. I do have a couple accomplishments in my past such as a couple of volunteer programs and a program named “Global Friendship Through Space Education” where I got the opportunity to go to Izmir, Turkey for 2 weeks and participate in the space camp program, totally free of charge when I was 13 years old. I have a number of important contacts that can provide for me letters of recommendation as well!

I would have more accomplishments during my high school years but the New York City public high school system heavily lacks extracurricular activities.

bumping my topic for additional help.

Wow, I’m really sorry to hear about your difficulties. I hope everything goes better from here on. Anyways, depending on the school, you may have to accumulate enough credits before you can be considered a transfer. For example, the University of Virginia requires that someone have 24 college credits before he is considered a transfer. Anything less is considered a freshman applicant. You should check out if the college you want to go to has anything like this. Good luck.
