Is it ok to move in a few hours earlier than assigned? I am worried that someone else will be using my parking spot if I show up earlier.

Can anyone show me the link where it shows the floor plan of all on-campus housing and whether each room is a double/triple/single and female/male?

And is anyone else not able to login to UCLA move-in page?

Where should we buy our dorm appliances? Best quality, prices, etc...

Is it ok to bring a microwave?

Is it okay to use older editions of a textbook instead of the one that we are supposed to buy? I guess this differs by each professor, so is it possible to contact via email/phone the professors about this? If it is, is there a directory somewhere that shows profs contact info?

Per the housing website, these items are banned:

Halogen lamps, coffee makers, hot water dispensers, toasters, toaster ovens, freestanding microwaves, any appliances with open coils, flammable materials such as candles, gas stoves, and barbecues; electric space heaters, any animals (see answer ID 269), waterbeds, materials to make bed lofts, dartboards.

As I understand it, they’re not going to turn you away, but parking may be an issue. So why not just request an earlier time?

Yep, me too. It’s very annoying.
No idea, sorry! I don’t think I’m going to get anything beyond what I already have.
No, I don’t think so. Most likely, no one’s ever going to find out if you have one, but technically, I believe it’s against the rules. They’re trying to promote their silly “microfridge”, the combo microwave and refrigerator, which IS allowed in dorm rooms, probably because they make some profit off of it.
Bingo! If the professor himself is the author of the textbook, then of course he will insist that you get the current version. But I’d imagine that most others will let you fly with any, but yes–it’s best to confirm that. In your ucla email, you can access the directory of faculty email addresses, so it’s worth a shot, but needless to say, don’t expect any reply from them. So, hey–why the heck not?–just get an older version for everything. The only reason newer versions come out is for the author’s personal gain. (again, needless to say)

What about course readers? I got an email from my chem professor saying we need to buy course readers. I’m a little annoyed that it’s not “officially” on the UCLA website (i.e. the textbook store) yet we need to get it for the class and the only way to get it is to physically go down to the store and buy a new one. The professor even specifically said old ones will not suffice.

Anybody know roughly how much the course reader for Scerri’s chem 20A is?

On that note, what kind of classes will require course readers? Is it all of them, some of them, or just teachers out to make an extra buck?

You’re right. Renting the microfridge is ridiculously pricey.

Just bring your microwave and fridge (and water boiler). They tell you which week the room check is, and they’re not allowed to move anything when they check it. One of my friends from high school even brought a rice cooker.

some notes on the microfridge - yes, they shamelessly promote it, but it also serves a purpose. with the microfridge, you never have the fridge AND microwave on at the same time. saves power, doesn’t overload circuits, makes dorm wiring happy.

it’s easy to get around this though. either hide your microwave under a cardboard box, or put it somewhere you can’t see during room checks. or if you are really clever, get a microwave and a fridge that are both black, stack them, and voila! instant poser microfridge :)

In Scerri’s email, he also mentioned a booklet of past exams, but he didn’t say where to purchase it. Anyone know something about that???

Unfortunately, by the time Scerri sent that email, I had already gotten brand new copies of the textbook and solutions manual from amazon, only to find out that I didn’t need them? Do you recommend returning one or both?

past exams come with the course reader for lavelle’s class…i dont know for scerri, though. i didnt take him. just wait until school starts and everything will be fine.
