A Few Move-In Questions

I am an incoming freshman, and like any new frosh, am a little confused when it comes to move-in. Any help would be appreciated.

So my college 10 move-in date is on the 17th of September. There is some orientation and dinner at like 6 for me, whereas my scheduled move-in time is at 7:30 A.M. I don't really mind waiting till then, but since I'm going with a parent, they would have to wait along with me, and it's not convenient because I have younger siblings that need to be picked up from daycare. If I could, I would start living in my dorm starting on the 17th, but it seems dorms are only open starting on the 18th? Can I actually start on my move-in date?

I know that we only have 3 minutes to unload everything from the car. However, how does this work? If I simply go with one parent, I will need to unload everything from the car to somewhere near the rooms within 3 mins... then wait with all my stuff (do I need to watch my stuff?) until my parent can park and return? Seems extremely inconvenient, or can I simply just start bringing my stuff up? I have a LOT of things.... mini fridge, microwave, clothes, everything...

Also, there seems to be so many "mandatory" orientations and meetings till the 23rd... do I really have to go? Haha.

Thanks in advance.

If your move-in date is the 17th, that’s the date you get to start living there. I’m pretty sure the 6pm dinner isn’t mandatory by any means.

LOL NO. You should have 10-30 minutes depending on the college. You can start moving things up, there will be RAs and orientation leaders around to help you out.

The other meetings are mandatory, yes. XP

Hmmm. Thanks for the reply. When they say mandatory, they take roll or something?

“The first mandatory Orientation activity for new students begins at 4:30PM for College Nine and
5:30PM for College Ten on move-in day and includes dinner. Please make sure to arrive on time so
you will be ready to attend this important session. If you have family assisting you with moving in
please let them know that you will be busy with Orientation activities for the rest of the evening.”

Did you go to it? >.< sounds boring.

What do you mean by helping? :open_mouth: Help you carry stuff up? 10-30 mins? o.o So what was that “you only have 3 minutes to unload.” :</p>

Ok, thanks a lot. This makes things so much easier. :]

where did you get all this info? I’m in college 10 too.

It was from the email they sent to your slugmail acc. It was the one where it told you the room assignment. There was all the general info, such as your move-in date and time, and a link to this website:

[Housing & Dining - College Ten - UCSC](http://collegeten.ucsc.edu/housing_dining/movein.php)

I heard it was 3 minutes to unload belongings in front of the college too–then the car has to leave to make room for other people. (This information came from College 9’s Move-In directions). If it’s 10-30 minutes, that would make unloading so much easier. xD How in the world would we unload in 3 minutes? I don’t see that happening!

yeah, thats what i heard too. :expressionless: 10-30 minutes would be great!!! x0

Whatttt. 3 minutes. Is so. Unreasonable. The RAs/Orientation Leaders will watch your stuff if nothing else.

I didn’t have a meeting the first night, so nooo…but nevermind. You ought to go. They do tend to take role. >_<

Really 3 minutes!? Last year it was 15 minutes. I’m not in from 9/10 and we had a mandatory meeting our first night as well but it was just our hall and there was no dinner. They didn’t take roll or anything so I don’t think they check but don’t take my word on it I would go just in case. It could also be a great way to get to meet people.

Move in is like a party. Last year at college 10 there was loud music bumpin and the three minutes is easy. Right when you park a flood of 10 RA and Orientation leaders come to your car and take all your stuff and put it in front of your building. Unloading is easy don’t worry. It’s all part of your freshman experience. Also those meetings are mandatory, I think they were with the RA. Basic housekeeping rules etc… Dinner is college night so it’s themed. Our floor ate as a group that night.

do u have to move in your scheduled time? like they gave me a time of 1230 to 130 to move in

Yup. Otherwise there won’t be space for you to park.

thanks! what do i need to bring to my dorm bed-wise? i have a pillow and blanket but i cant find any twin XL sheets they have anywhere. also do i need a mattress pad?

Bed Bath & Beyond sell Twin XL Sheets! I’d say a warm blanket cause I heard it gets pretty cold in SC.

Target has some really good Twin XL sheets. Also I would recommend a mattress pad. I’ve never tried sleeping on the beds without one but my roommate did for the first week but then she went home and came back with one.

I would recommend a mattress pad. Okay, I haven’t seen C10 beds yet, but most college dorms have waterproof covers on their mattresses. It’s kind of plastic-y and uncomfortable to have just a thin fitted sheet over it. So get a fitted Twin XL mattress pad that has some substance to it.

That’s great. whew* I have a lot of stuff I need to bring. boxes and boxes. lol. xD

It’s coming up in less than a week! My time is at 7:30… what happens if I’m early? Will anyone be there to help me?

BTW, do any of you know what floor my room is on? My building is 6 and my room number is 6 thousand 1 hundred something. Residence hall, single, college 10. :O

asdsdf: The first number is your building, the second number is your floor, and the last two represent your room number. The whole number will be next to the door, though.

So for 61XX, you are in Building 6 (you obviously already know this :)) on the first floor.

@asdsdf: ouch, that’s building 6 floor 1. I was on that floor last year and that is the floor with the CSO (campus security officer) office. I shared a wall with them so it wasn’t great. Everyone on our floor got written up for being too loud, which kinda sucked. There’s 3 singles on the right side of the building (6124 and under) and 6124 + is left side building and I think there were 3 singles there too.

Oooh, thanks. Moving in will be easier, as well as getting to my room, but being next to a CSO doesn’t sound appealing at all…

Oh no… :expressionless: What happens when you get written up? Which room were you in and which room is the CSO in? :[

BTW, about the guest policy, can someone come visit me during the day and have that not count for one of my days? It seems they don’t want people sleeping over, but someone from outside the school can visit me in my room any time right? :open_mouth: How do they keep track on who’s staying over anyways? Thanks.
