A few nomination questions

I'm currently a HS junior with a few questions about the nomination process.

First of all, when do I apply for nominations? As soon as possible once my applicant file is open?

Do I have to wait until after I take the SAT to request nominations?

I'm planning on applying for a Presidential nomination as well (my father is career Army). How competetive are these compared to Congressional/Vice Presidential? How does my father's rank factor in (ie does rank help/hinder prospective applicants)?

Finally, after viewing the sample requests for nomination I was left wondering how I could distinguish myself. Should I attach a letter to the request explaining why I believe that I should be nominated?

Congratulations to those who have been accepted into the incoming '06 class. Great work!

Thanks in advance for any help you all can give me!

Cuse,

A lot of the information you are requesting is included on the Admissions pages of the West Point web site, usma.edu. Most MOC's are just completing this cycle of nominations. You probably begin talking to them early this spring and you'll be in great shape. I recall that they wanted us to send complete packages including letters of recommendation as 1 package. The only part that came from another source was the test scores.

The main point I can add is to take the SAT and even the ACT several times. They will combine your best scores on each section which could lead to a higher composite. Some high school students do better on one test rather than the other so by taking both you are giving yourself the advantage.

Also, if you're a junior you may want to consider applying to SLS which is designed for rising high school seniors.

Best of luck to you!

CUSE0507 - The sample letters provided on the USMA were just to request being considered for a nomination. That is what you do the spring of your junior year. Most MOC have application packages that they send out that are completed and this is the place for you to make yourself standout. Some MOC have their application packages posted on their websites for you to download and fill out. The big package is to be completed early fall your senior year. You will have to contact them to determine their process. Good luck.

Just to say, I didn't send a letter of interest at all. Staight packet. I received a Senatorial nomination that way. But looking back, I wished I had sent the letter of interest.

In our area, both U.S. Senators post their nomination application packages on their websites. They do not want a letter of interest. Alternatively, the U.S. Representative only provides the application package after a letter of interest is received by his office.

Thanks for all of the help/information everyone!

Just one more question (sorry!)-

Do any of you know how Presidential/Service Connected nominations work? I assume that there is an packet for that just like there are packets for congressional?

Thanks again!
