Hi all -

I'm getting ready to leave the office right now. I won't be around tomorrow when decisions go live, the first time I have missed a decisions post since I began working here. I have some family obligations and traveling to do. Matt and Kris - and likely some of the bloggers - will be hanging out in the open threads on mitadmissions.org.

Before I left for the night - and the next few weeks, since I'm trying to take some time to rest before RA begins in January - I wanted to share a few thoughts.

Tomorrow, some of you will be admitted to MIT. Some of you will be deferred to RA. And some of you will not be offered admission to MIT this year.

To those of you who are admitted: congratulations. I would say that you have been given the opportunity to become a member of one of the most amazing communities on the planet, but that would be only partially true. Partially because we have not given you this opportunity: you have seized it yourself. We'll be in touch in the coming weeks and months, and I'm very proud of and happy for all of you.

To those of you who are deferred: do not be distressed. We defer the bulk of our applicants during Early Action because many of them are competitive in Regular Action. It won't be any easier in RA. You should continue to apply to other schools which you might like to attend. Many MIT students - including some of the bloggers - were deferred and admitted. It will all be OK.

The same sentiments - do not be distressed, it will all be OK - go to you who will not be offered admission. If tomorrow you receive this notice then you should know we did not do it lightly. Instead, we did it because we wanted to be honest with you that we were not going to admit you this year, we didn't want to drag it out any longer than we had to, and we wanted to make sure you applied to other colleges as necessary. The world will keep turning and you will go somewhere great.

Thanks to all those who have posted in CC over the last few months, especially those who have helped fill in knowledge when I could not (and often before me even when I tried). I'll be around somewhat sparingly but as I can in the near future.
