A few prospective student questions

I’m helping my nephew look at colleges. He has a lot of different interests (horticulture, woodworking, creating habitats for more unusual pets, bonsai, architecture and archaeology to name a few). He seems most interested in majoring in archaeology (but you know how that can change once a student is in college). I thought Beloit seemed like an interesting option for him.

Questions:

The admissions page says that test scores are optional. Do most applicants submit test scores? Beyond admission decision, is it better to submit scores for possible scholarship consideration?

Do most people submit videos for admission? Most of the posts on this forum are older and I don’t see any mention of videos.so not sure if this is just b/c videos are a new thing in admissions or if ppl just don’t submit them.

I would love to hear any impressions/experience with the Archeology Dept. and/or any other experience people have had with plants/horticulture and even woodworking there. I watched a video on Beloit and saw both greenhouses and woodworking featured in the video.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

My D is a rising sophomore at Beloit. When she applied two years ago, there was no video submission, so it’s a new thing.

Beloit is very well known for its Anthropology Department (archaeology is a sub-field within that department). In fact, my D, whom I thought would major in something more like English or philosophy, has declared herself an anthropology major. I can’t speak to your nephew’s other interests, but I do know of at least one current student who does woodworking as a hobby.

You can figure out how many kids submit test scores by looking at section C of Beloit’s Common Data Set (searchable on Beloit’s website). You can also figure out how much merit aid consideration is based on test scores by playing around with the Net Price Calculator (also easy to find under “Afford”). You can plug in GPA with no test scores and then you can plug in varying GPAs and/or varying test scores to gauge which variable is more important to the college.

We have been very pleased with our D’s Beloit experience so far. She is really flourishing.
