A few questions about AP's (self study & amount)

My AP schedule for next year (10th grade) is as follows:

Calc AB, Compsci, Chinese,
SS: psych, economics, environmental science

My first question is: how much time should I spend on the self-study? A friend and I are planning to spend maybe 10 minutes a day throughout the school year for each of them, along with 30 minutes on the weekends. I know there is not a magic time that is set in stone, but what would is best for MASTERY of the course? I do not care so much about a 5 as I do about learning something.

My second question: I plan to double my schools record of AP's (10). Should I try to stack them up sophomore year, junior year, or senior year?

Thanks for all constructive responses.

as a sohpomore...you are taking three APs, and self-studying three....and you'd be the first person i know to be doing that. and 10 minutes a day is probably not enough even if you spend 30 min on the weekends...to me, this is not possible.

and honeslty why would you take so many APs????!!!
i get how people just wnat to take as many as possible to impress colleges and stuff but honestly...if i were you i know i'd fail at least 2 of these APs on the exams.

i really wouldn't do this if i were you. i'm a junior and only taking 4 and is thinking about dropping one due to extreme workload...but then again i'm kind of taking the harder ones whereas the ones that you are taking and self-studying are not as burdensome.

i wouldn't do so many to be honest.....and to answer your second question, if you absolutely want to double that record, take as many during sophomore yr and the least during junior year. i doubt you'd even want to take that many your senior year b/c come on no one actually wants to take that many APs, enough is enough.

i was a sophomore last year, and took 4 ap's..i think you can probably do psych and envi sci....but probably not both economics added on to that..

and instead of doing 10 min a day..i think you should do smt. lik one hour a week or smt..personally, i think that is more effective..

as for stacking up...are you saying the school's record is already 10, or you want to do 10??

I'm a sophomore doing AP Calculus BC, AP Physics B, and 4 years of college Spanish (Will take AP Spanish Language exam) in school. I'm thinking about self studying a few of: Physics C: Mechanics, Physics C: Electricity and magnetism, Psychology, Stats, computer science, English language/lit and stats but I'm very likely to change my mind. (I mean those are the APs I'm interested in but I'm not sure which ones I'll self-study.)

To be honest, 10 minutes will probably not be enough. For one, it's hard to just plan to sit down for 10 minutes and you can't cover a lot in 10 minutes. You would probably do better with 30 minutes every other day. I mean... 10 minutes is like... sit down and get up.

LOL I hold my school record of the most APs taken: 1. :) Good luck whatever you decide.

Aigiqinf...DAAAAAMMMN. Thats a pretty crazy schedule. It shames my whole grade, in which I have the hardest schedule. What school do you go to?

Another thing, I expected that 10 minutes would not be enough. My schedule is pretty packed already, as 3 seasons of sports is a requirement at my school. But I will try to add in more time, or do what you recommended. Thanks for the input!

Psych Econ and Env Sci are all very easy self study APs. I self studied Psych in 2 days and got a 5. Econ would take about a month and so would Env Sci depending on how much Bio background you have.

Your AP Chinese will probably be a breeze for you (I'm assuming you're Chinese since you're taking this AP as a soph). Calc and CompSci will be your hardest APs this year probably. Calc isn't really that hard (you're taking it as as soph..so I'm assuming that you're already great at math). I have no clue about CS.

I would do it if I were you. Lots of easy APs your first year doing it. I always regretted not challenging myself more in Soph/Junior years =[

Your schedule will be easy.

Chinese is the most BS class ever if you are Chinese (which I'd bet my life on). CS is middle-tierish. Calc is a joke.

I'd spend more time on self-study :D.

As a sophomore, I took APES, bio, calc, euro, so you should be good to go. (Though maybe you should self-study less? I mean, self-study in itself isn't really worth the time.) And besides, you could use overlap from bio on APES if you ever plan on taking it. etc.

Do you mean just the AP Calculus BC, AP Physics B, and AP Spanish Language? Because those are the only ones I'm sure of. The other list is what I'm considering self-studying... like a pool of possible classes. :) I actually go to a pretty small school... online classes ftw!

I thought I'd mention, I found this site the other day and it might be helpful:

National Repository of Online Courses (NROC)

Good luck!

thanks, you've been a real help. I also found out today that my Chinese AP is a Directed Study...online course ftw.

I have another question, but I did not want to make a new topic.

So I found out my schedule, and my Chinese 5 class is a 'directed study', in which I teach myself. Once in a while I can meet with my teacher to discuss what I have learned. Also, I have to present a project demonstrating what I have learned.

What would I do to prepare for this class? I have plans to self-study for all other classes; I ordered textbooks and prepbooks. However, AP Chinese is relatively new- my teacher does not know how to teach it, and I definately do not.
