Hey guys. I'm a rising junior and I'm just doing preliminary research right now so I'd appreciate any information I can get.

1) What are the dorms like? I'm assuming they are just like typical big state school dorms; cement squares, no AC, etc. Are there any nicer dorms? Are there honors dorms? What are they like? What are the food options on/around campus?

2) What are the athletic facilities like? The ones open to the entire student body, not the actual teams. Are there any indoor options for the winter? (indoor basketball courts, etc)

3) How hard is it to get tickets as a freshman to basketball and football games? Where do the students sit at basketball games?

4) Are there any basketball leagues for the student body to participate in? Competitive leagues but leagues that are also just a way to have a fun break from school work.

5) Any information on your journalism and sports management programs? Is it possible to double major in those two? Or can you only major/minor? What kind of internships do students get out of the SM program? Does a SM degree look bad on an application to a top notch MBA grad program or law school?

Thanks in advance!

1.) mostly they are the typical state school dorms. All the ones I’ve ever been in have the cinderblock walls you were talking about, but there are several dorms that have AC. Also, I believe Eigenmann has some triple rooms, and the dorms I’m going to live in have individual bathrooms with a toilet and shower. There aren’t honors dorms, but there are honors floors in each “neighborhood.” (When you request your dorm, you request what neighborhood you want be in instead of specific residence halls). There are also Freshman Interest Groups you can request that live in the same residence hall. You can read more about them here: [Freshman Interest Groups - What is a FIG?](http://figs.indiana.edu/student). Many of the residence halls have some kind of cafeteria, or convenience store. I’ve only eaten in the dorms twice, but the food is what you’d expect from a college cafeteria. There are several restaurants downtown; kirkwood has a lot of chain restaurants and 4th street has several ethnic restaurants.

2.) The Student Recreational Sports Center, or SRSC, is actually a pretty nice, new building. The pool is great (and there’s another one at the hyper building). The SRSC has a track, basketball hoops, a weights room, and places where you can take various workout classes. Here’s a link to the SRSC website [Home | IU Campus Recreational Sports](<a href=“Home | IU Campus Recreational Sports”>http://www.iurecsports.org/)

3.) At orientation all students had the opportunity to sign up for football/basketball tickets and receive them for all the home games (tickets were VERY easy to get). There’s a student section for football games, and students can sit wherever. I’m not sure exactly how the basketball games work, but there isn’t a specific student section.

4.) IU has several club sports, which are competitive but not as serious as varsity sports. It also has several intramural sports, which are just for fun. IU has intramural basketball, but I’m not sure about club basketball. Listings for club/intramural sports are on the SRSC website.

5.) I think that I’m not the right person to answer this question, but I’d say you can probably double major in journalism and sports management. I have a friend who started out as a psychology/english major and is now double majoring in journalism and political science.

My own 2 cents:

1.dorms are tiny, but I think about half have ac
2. I always go to the HPER to lift (a LOT less crowded than the SRSC), and run in the winter. When the weather’s nice I do track workouts at the track (by the soccer stadium). The outdoor track is pretty bad.
3. Not hard at all.
4. There are tons of leagues and club sports teams. I used to play golf and basketball in high school and made the transition to the club ultimate frisbee team (the A team is very competitive). I highly recommend joining, it was the best decision I made my freshman year for a lot of reasons.
5. It is doable, just make sure you get a list of all the required courses and plan your schedule accordingly.

Thanks so much guys. Very helpful. I’ll be in touch if I have any more questions
