Hello!
I am just curious about a few policies and some basic info about Lehigh university.
The Questions:
What is the general coursework for a first year engineer student?
When do you have to declare your engineering focus/major?
Are all labs free to use at any time by students?
Thanks in advanced!

This info is straight out of the course catalog. Sorry the spacing got messed up a bit.

Thank you for the speedy reply
Would you happen to know if you can use the laboratories at any time for any discipline?

I would imagine there are different policies for different labs. The labs available for your classes - chemistry, physics etc. would have their own hours. But, if you get a job working in a professor’s lab I would imagine you would have much more freedom and probably your own set of keys to do your work. My son worked in several labs and enjoyed each of them. Whatever area of engineering you are interested in has their own section in Lehigh’s Course Catalog - just google it! Each professor will have a summary of their research. It might be interesting to read some of their latest work. Once you get to Lehigh I would recommend stopping by professor offices during office hours to just chat about their work. Professors love students to show up for their office hours!!! From the visits you can see who you feel the most comfortable with. My son even had a professor introduce him to another professor that had a research project he thought my son would enjoy!

The first year engineering students take an intro class where you sample 3 different kinds of engineering. I think you need to pick your major before scheduling courses for the the second year - looks like registration for fall semester is around the second week of April. My son had friend’s who switched areas and are still graduating in 4 years.

The engineering department has a great engineering handbook. There is a wonderful graph that lists every area of engineering and shows you the breakdown of that major. So for example if you are interested in Chemical it shows how much of your study involves chemistry, physics, calculus, etc. Each area has a different breakdown. So you can easily start seeing which areas of engineering are going to be more compatible for you based on how well you did or how much you enjoyed the required chemistry, calculus, and physics classes.

Best of Luck!

@kikkydee thank you very much
