Hey, I visited SMCM earlier today and I really fell in love with the place. The faculty I met with were very friendly and extremely helpful and the campus was breathtaking.

My only concerns stem from a few reviews I read from past students.

Internet speed

I have heard that the internet speed at SMCM has abysmal internet speeds. I use the internet a lot for both videogaming and video watching so this is a necessity for me. Could anyone let me know of their experience with the internet here?

Major

I am a computer science major and St. Mary's is known as a liberal arts college. Could anyone let me know of their experience with the CS major at SMCM?

When we visited a couple of years ago, there was an article in the student paper about a project to increase the internet speed. If I remember right, they were close on it (so close that I remember we decided it was not a concern if my D decided to apply). She did not apply, but I do think they had something in process then. But hopefully someone from there can post an update.

Internet speed has improve greatly in the last year. They have wireless in the academic buildings and in one of the dorms. The have a donation to spend on improving the system. From what I have read Verizon did not handle this well and SMCM went with another provider.

Don’t let the LAC part scare you off. Do you want to compete with hunderds of people in your class at a university or your do you want to take classes with about 12 people in your class? SMCM is vested in getting people to take and stay in stem programs. I am sure the personal attention will help you to learn the subject matter better.

I am a current student at SMCM. The internet in the very beginning of the year was awful and took 20 minutes to watch a 2 minute youtube clip. They upgraded it and now it works perfectly fine. People are allowed to have routers in there rooms so they can have wifi or you can just use a cord and they both work fine.
I am not a Computer Science majors but I know a number of them and they all seem to really enjoy the program and they learn a lot.
Hope this helps :)

Science majors in all forms are very very serious at SMCM. Don’t be too daunted –

Also, internet isn’t too shabby anymore. This is what I got with my vaguely unreliable router: <a href=“Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test”>Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test;

and ethernet is very reliable.
