So I'm currently a senior in NC that will be attending a local community college next year. I want to transfer to UGA as a sophomore. My major is journalism with a sports concentration. I'm aware of the '30 credits for sophomore transfer by April 1st' requirement, so is there anyone who can give me advice on how to get those 30 credits by said time? I plan to graduate HS with two AP credits, (APUSH, AP Government), but can I take classes at my CC over summer or something to get a head start? I really am open to just about anything. I know I could wait and transfer after sophomore year from the CC but I'd prefer to spend as little time as possible there. I'd only do that if it were an absolute must. Would you recommend that I speak with someone at UGA to help plan this out? And my final question is if UGA gives merit based aid or scholarships to transfers with high stats. I got a 24 on my ACT, and from what I understand people that transfer for sophomore year are required to submit testing results, is this true? Should I re-take my ACT?

A lot of questions, but I appreciate any help here. Thanks!

You need to complete a year of college before you can apply for transfer to UGA. Therefore, the April 1st deadline cause many people to not be able to apply for the fall semester of their Sophomore year. I would suggest taking 15+ credits a semester, and try to transfer the fall semester of your junior year. You don’t need to submit test grades to transfer, just transcripts from every college you have attended. I don’t think there are many transfer scholarships available, if any.

When you say complete one year of college… isn’t a year of college defined as 30 credits though? If I have enough by April 1st I should qualify right?

I’m transferring to UGA as a sophomore so I might be able to help you out! As long as you have the 30 credits by April 1, you’ll be fine. I had 15 from my AP exams and 15 from my first semester of college. So, if you do well on your AP exams, your CC will give you credit for the corresponding classes. Let’s say that your CC gives you 6 hours for the two classes, that means that you’ll need 24 more hours. I don’t know how many hours you plan to take in the fall, but I feel like you’d probably benefit from taking summer classes because that’s a lot of hours for one semester.

UGA never requested any of my SAT scores or even wanted me to send them. They’ll only look at your college GPA and credits. As for the year in college, if you are applying for sophomore admission that means that you have been in college for a year because you need at least 30 credits for them to review your file. And like alarsen said, there aren’t many transfer scholarships. I hope this answered some of your questions!

You should check out their admissions blog. They routinely say that you need 30 credits AND to have completed a year of college before the application deadline. So technically no freshmen can transfer there. Just work really hard and keep your grades up. You should be able to get. I’m still waiting on a decision, so I look at their admissions blog constantly.
