A few questions about what to bring to UCSD

These might be stupid questions, but...

-Do I have to bring laundry detergent and the like or is it already provided?
-Should I bother to bring eating utensils...? Would there ever be a situation where I would need them if I'm living in the dorms?
-Do I need to bring a vacuum for my dorm room?
-Should I really buy a chair cushion for the dorm chair?
-Would I need to clean the windows in my dorm room?

...I blame the terrifyingly long list of things to bring in that one other thread that I copy-pasted onto Microsoft Word and looked through.

Strange, I thought I had more questions.

Laundry detergent is not provided. You’ll also have to pay to use the laundry machines, so bring quarters / enroll in tritoncash.

I brought the basics - a knife, a spoon and a fork. I liked eating breakfast in my room so the spoon was dead useful. Definitely recommend, and it doesn’t take up much space anyway.

Some people preferred to have their own mini vacuum. A vacuum is provided, though, and I thought it worked well enough.

Chair cushion - honestly depends on you, and where you’re living. I thought the Marshall dorm chairs had enough cushion in them, but I suffered in the apartments and really wish I brought one.

Er. I don’t think they clean your dorm windows, so if you like to be neat like that I guess you could bring some Windex. It never bothered me >__> but again, it’s a personal preference.

Bring food …lots of food!!

It’s not like the campus is cut off from the rest of the world. You can always take the shuttle to the shopping center and get whatever you need.

@momosky: Thanks for your reply/recommendations! They’re really helpful.

@Ramfan661: Fooood. I’d probably just bring bananas or granola bars though.

@Comp Sci Guy: Good point, but it’s kind of nice knowing what I need beforehand. Then again, I probably should have thought of bringing just the basic stuff and buying what I feel I need when I actually get there…

What about a TV and ps3?

The rooms look really cramped, I wonder if my stuff will fit.

Everything but the laundry machine is your call, lol. I recommend a sturdy pop-up laundry hamper or basket so dirty clothes isn’t spilling all over your floor.

You can just take utensils from the dining hall and stash them in your room. That’s what me and my house mates did, anyway. Doesn’t hurt to have your own set though. I would recommend bringing a paring knife for better cutting because the butter knives at school don’t even hurt, lol. I’d also recommend a cup/mug of your own. Speaking of which, bring a water filter pitcher!

You can borrow vacuums from the housekeeping staff on campus.

Depending on which college you live in, I don’t think chair cushions were necessary but if you really like comfortable sitting, don’t hesitate.

As for snacks, I recommend granola bars (I like Odwalla and Nature’s Valley), seaweed, popcorn, saltine crackers, and if you have a fridge, the possibilities are endless. Even though there are markets and places off-campus, I found it very useful to stock up on some snacks that I can just reach over/under for in my room instead of having to go out every time a craving struck. my 2 cents

@pollitos: If you’re willing to share, there’s plenty of room in your common area :stuck_out_tongue: if you’re in a triple and want to stash it in your room, I’d advise against it. It’s definitely possible - depending on the size of your tv and what college you’re in - but there isn’t a lot of free space in those triples. There’s plenty of space in a single, though! :)

If you’re living in the dorms, I really think there’s more than enough dining dollars to afford snacks straight from the markets as long as you budget. I just stash up on my favorite snacks that aren’t sold in the dining halls. Bananas, trail mix, granola, dried fruit, and popcorn are great healthy on-the-go snacks. Peanut butter with anything was my go-to in the dorms  If you have a fridge, hummus and pita, yogurt and cheese were in a lot of people’s dorm fridges.

I’m in a double, but it’s pretty clear it wont fit in the room.
I’ll just leave it in the living room area, I suppose.

If you’re a guy, bring food. Lots of food. Have your mom ship you food.

The biggest problem for you will be running out of dining dollars. With the fast pace, you hit mid terms quick and you will destroy your dining dollars binge eating to get through exams.

None of my little’s have dining dollars by the end of the quarter except the females.
