A few questions for current amherst students

I am an admitted student for '11 and am pretty set on Amherst with a double major in political science and art. Part of the appeal of Amherst was definately their open curriculum, however, I’m not quite sure where to start. Suggestions on courses appropriate for my major/s would be greatly appreciated :). Oh yeah and also which dorm style would you recommend… ie. double, suite, etc. Thank youuuu

I can't say much about art and poli sci classes, but as far as housing goes, you don't have many options freshman year. A handful of kids get singles in James and Stearns, but all the rest will be one-room doubles, I think. Charles Pratt is a new freshman dorm opening this fall, so definitely put that as your top choice; then probably Stearns and James followed by Appleton and South.

Be happy they're not putting freshmen in the trailers, Plaza and Waldorf, anymore.

I can't say anything about art classes, but for poli sci, you will probably want to start with an intro class, between numbers 1 and 20.
Intro poli sci offerings 1st semester are:
POSC 1: Political Identities (Basu)
POSC 5: Art of Ruling (Arkes)
POSC 13: World Politics (Machala)
POSC 18: Social Org. of Law (Sarat)

thanks for the pratt bit, will do.....
as for the poli sci courses, is it recommended to take the intro courses or would it be better to dive into higher level courses?..... are you required to take the intro courses to enroll in the higher level courses?

You need to take an intro course for the major, but you could take it any time. It's probably not a terrible idea to start with one though.

Ok. Thanks for your help! ; )

Some more questions from a prospective '11

When is construction going to be done?

How are the Spanish classes?

How much interaction is there with UMASS and Hampshire students?

How much parking is there? (Do most non-frosh have cars there?)

Are most people happy at Amherst?

1) Construction is never done. Never.

2) Spanish who?

3) Sometimes the UMass kids come down and beat some Amherst kid senseless, and we do the same for Hampshire.

4) Parking is, like, $60 a semester, I think. Good luck finding a spot, though.

5) Define "people".

Obviously I'm just being an idiot about everything. #4 is pretty true, though.

More questions please:
How many students directly go to the law-school per year after their graduation? Thanks!
