A few questions from QAS

Here are what I have:
I will appreciate very much if you provide thoroughly explained answers.

In Shakespeare's Macbeth, the main reason that Macbeth kills the king is a result of when Lady Macbeth tells him that he will be considered a coward if he does not.
(A) that Macbeth kills the king is a result of when
(B) that Macbeth kills the king is that
(C) that Macbeth kills the king results from when
(D) for Macbeth killing the king is because
(E) for Macbeth in killing the king is that

I crossed out D with certainty, because "because" is redundant.
I chose E. The answer says B.

If we have knowledge of the future, our lives would be more predictable but less interesting.
(A) If we have --> what I chose
(B) If we have had --> pluperfect subjunctive; verb tense disagreement
(C) If we would have --> I just know that this is wrong...
(D) Provided we have --> Same as C...
(E) Were we to have --> Correct answer

Thanks to you all

for Macbeth in killing the king is that

it really just doesn’t make logical sense to use that, i woulda crossed that one out. B makes the most sense. the killing thing makes it kinda wierd

^Not a great explanation, but yes, the awkward use of “killing” makes me dislike (D), and (E).

For 8. you need the subjunctive because in the second segment of the sentence you have “would be…”

The first one is B because it matches the tense of the rest of the sentence.

I think the second one is E because it matches the “our lives would be”. The would makes a future tense, or whatever it is called. Kind of the structure of “If something, then something”.

Have to use subjunctive tense because its a hypothetical situation AKA a wish.

Here are some examples of each structure, taken from the web via search engine (quoted material is my explanation):
1)

“Part of the reason that men seem so much less loving than women is that men’s behavior is measured with a feminine ruler.”

“QUALITY is the reason that we have made our mark as a company.”

“The reason that it took some time to come to this conclusion is that. . . .”

“The reason that knowledge has these constraints . . . is that the mind plays an active role. . . .”

“The reason that academics want and need their complaints is that it is important for them to feel oppressed.”
2)

“If I were a butterfly, I would have wings.” (as opposed to “If I am a butterfly, I have wings”)

“God bless you.” (as opposed to “God blesses you”)

“Heaven help the working woman.”

“If I were a boy. . . .” (as opposed to “If I was a boy”)

“We recommend that she come.” (as opposed to “We recommend that she comes”)

“I insist that he be here.” (as opposed to “I insist that he is here” or “I insist that he will be here”)

“Were he alive, he would be proud of his son.”

^Thank you. That was the most correct explanation that I was looking for.

@Crazybandit
Can you post more such structures? I am an international student.

Sorry if I “hijacked” (in a figurative sense) crazybandit, but here are some subjunctive structures that I know.

Pluperfect Subjunctive OR Past Perfect Subjunctive
If (subject) (past perfect verb) (then, optional) (past tense of modal auxiliary verb)

Example:
If I had been in a car accident last week, I would have skipped school today.

Mandative/Jussive Subjunctive

Case 1
It is necessary that you do your homework every day.
It is indispensable that Albert arrive at time for his appointment tomorrow.

Case 2
He insisted that the work be finished on time.
He demanded that you remove your earphones.
She mandated that we shun our foes.
She commanded that the candy bar be given to her.

Case 3
I highly recommend that you review your work after taking a QAS exam.
I strongly suggest that you fill in these forms before registration.

Where do you live? Because i’m still waiting for my QAS.
