A Few Questions regarding transferring to UC Berkley

Do I have to take all of the classes under the Prerequisites section on Assist.org or can I transfer before I finish all of them and finish them at UC Berkeley?

If I complete the IGETC, can I transfer without a major to Berkeley and just finish the prereqs for my major there?

I'm just really confused and stressed out over all of this.

Also, does it matter if I transfer in 3 years instead of 2?

Pick up the telephone

Since you talk about IGETC, which must be certified by a CCC, I assume you are enrolled at a CC or planning on doing so. Every CCC has a xfer center with loads of literature on how to xfer, counselors to talk to, etc.

I’m sure many of your questions can be answered here. Google is your friend.

<a href=“Transfer Requirements - Office of Undergraduate Admissions”>http://admissions.berkeley.edu/transferstudents</a></p>

Sometimes you can get in with missing pre-reqs, but it depends on your major. If your pre-reqs are hard to find (like EECS/CS) or if there are a whole lot of them, you can miss a couple. But generally speaking you should be completing them before you transfer. It’ll make your application more competitive.

You should really pick a major before you transfer. Remember that you’ll be entering as a Junior, and you’re expected to start taking upper division coursework then… not be playing catch up on lower div requirements. Every UC will ask you what major you’re applying to. If you apply to a major in L&S at Berkeley, technically you enter undeclared, but you still need to list a major and complete the pre-reqs for it. But there may be some flexibility if you choose to move to a different (similar) L&S major.

Number of years doesn’t matter, it’s number of credits that’s important. If your CC is on semesters, you should complete 60+ credits by the time you transfer. Remember that apps are due about a year before transfer, so most students apply when they have around 30 credits already completed. Keep in mind that there’s a 70 credit cap (just on the number of credits, not subject credit), so if you have more credits than that you can only use 70 of those towards the 120 credit requirement for graduation. But UC won’t care how many years you spend so long as you’ve got enough credits to be a junior.

You want to complete as many prereqs as you can before transfering. If you’re missing one or two you can transfer, but if you miss more than 3 in impacted majors you’re automatically disqualified.

As far as years, no it doesn’t matter. Credits matter.

Failure is spot on. Finish IGETC and finish as many major prereqs as possible. Some will of course argue that if the major does not require you to take all the major prereqs then you don’t need to, however keep in mind having them all done does in fact make you more competitive, this is per the counselors I have spoken to at 2 UC’s. Just because it says you do not need to, does not mean you shouldn’t.

You absolutely, 100% need to know your major when entering a UC. Time to put on your big boy pants. Remember, 60 units is a must, the time it takes you to reach it means very little. 2 years or 10, they don’t really care.

I totally agree with @fullload. If your major simply says recommended, do as many as you can, because trust me, there will be others who will have done them. Also, while UCSD allows you to enter undeclared, if you haven’t completed any pre-requisites, it’s gonna cost you a whole lot more money playing catch-up.
