I'm a freshman currently attending a state school and thinking about applying as a transfer to the following schools: WUSTL, Tufts, William and Mary, and UNC-CH. These aren't really general questions about transferring but rather more specific to each of the schools but I figured it would be easier to ask them all in one thread. Any thoughts, opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Should I even apply to William and Mary? It's not exactly my first choice but I would certainly place it above UNC and I think it would be an excellent fit for me. However, I'm concerned about how much financial aid I would receive as it is a public school and I am OOS. Ultimately, it all comes down to whether or not I can afford it so should I have any expectations or should I save my $60?

WUSTL does not require additional essays but I would like to submit a "Why WUSTL" since I can't really be specific in the common app essay. How would I go about doing this?

I also know that WUSTL has rolling admissions (around 30 days according to their website) for transfers so would it hinder my chances in any way if i wait until right before the deadline to apply? The reason why I am asking this is because I want to receive all my decisions around the same time so that I don't have to make any deposits before I get a decision from another school (that is, assuming that I even get accepted to any of these schools LOL).

And finally, this might come across really dumb but for instructor evaluations and college official's reports, am I supposed print these forms out and ask the respective person to fill them out once and then make copies or should I ask them to fill out four different ones? Also, do I have to mail them out myself or should they? Sorry, this is my first time using the common app.

1) I don’t believe W&M guarantees to meet need for out of state students.

2) Does WUSL have a supplement? If not, then there used to be a spot on the common app for any “additional information.” Or you could merge your why Transfer and why WUSL essay.

3) Applying earlier is better. It is acceptable in the transfer process to “double deposit” because there is no standardized deadlines like there are for freshmen admissions.

4) I gave my professors a folder with addressed stamped envelopes as well as a list of the deadlines for schools. I also put in the folder the common app evaluation form. I gave my profs as many copies of the evaluation form as I had schools. I left it up to them whether to photocopy or fill out multiple forms. The college official also mailed my reports, but I did not give her addressed stamped envelopes.

Technically, they do have a supplement but it only requires you to fill out personal information and does not include any essays. If I use the “additional information”, is there a way that I can only submit that part of the application to WUSTL?

Also, can you further explain this “double deposit” thing? Since there are no deadlines, does that mean I can make wait until I get all of my decisions to make a deposit? Or does it mean that my deposits will be refundable?

There is a way to make different versions of the common app.

If you are accepted at a school you want to attend, but you are still waiting to hear back from others you can either a) ask for an extension on the reply date b) send in your deposit and withdraw later if you end up accepting & depositing at another school. No, deposits aren’t refundable, but the deposit at the school you end up enrolling at will be applied to your bill.

Oh and another reason to get your apps in sooner rather than later is because colleges will have more money for financial aid at the beginning of the time frame than the end.
