A few questions

Hey guys I have a few questions and any insight would be helpful:

For anyone in the Film program, how strong is it? What are some of the perks of being a film major at Hofstra? Are there any trips to NYC within the major?

How is the campus life? Does it feel like a commuter school?

How is the surrounding city in terms of what you can go out and do on the weekends or whenever you want to go out and do something?

What is the dorm life like?

Thanks for any help!

The surrounding “city” of Hempstead, NY immediately adjacent to the campus is a low-income, sketchy area. Last year, a machete-wielding thug accosted students leaving one of the three bars immediately adjacent to the campus. WNBC News 4 reported on it. While no one was physically injured, it gives you a flavor of the local community. Many students go home on the weekend. However. proximity to Manhattan (30 minutes by train) and access to internships and all that NYC offers is a plus.

Thanks for your response! Does anyone else know anything about the first few questions?

Hi! I’m a current freshman at Hofstra and will do my best to answer your questions!

(I’m not a film major, but I was a major in the school of Comm for my beginning semester and the department was always really hands on and friendly. The film program has lots of clubs and opportunities for you to join and become a part of.)

I am a resident and live on campus. There is usually a lot to do on the weekends as long as you actively seek out the events and programs. With the proximity to NYC you can always take a day trip into the city when things slow down. There are also free trips to the city through Hofstra that you can attend.

The surrounding area is perfectly fine. Granted, it is a low-income community, but the community members don’t come onto campus (we’re basically like a bubble) and I have been able to safely walk through the neighborhoods. I’m petite female and I have never felt unsafe walking alone through the neighborhoods. Just be smart and make good decisions and you’ll be fine.

Dorm life is good. I currently live in first year housing in the Netherlands and the people in your house become your family for your first year at Hofstra. Contrary to popular belief, living in the Towers isn’t the worst thing possible. I’m actually going to be living there next semester and I’m really excited (some of the rooms get a million dollar view of NYC skyline.)

I hope this helped, let me know if I can answer any other questions or if you want me to elaborate on anything
