actually, about cell phones, i have cingular and i got horrible reception throughout campus during admit weekend. Which service provider works best?

Cingular is generally accepted as the best reception... other services work, but you might have to walk around to find a place with good service. It doesn't really matter what kind of laptop you get, whatever you like best and can afford is fine. You might want a light laptop if you plan to bring it to classes, you might want one with a bigger screen if you want to watch movies, etc.

There are few things that are absolutely necessary for Stanford. A bike, laptop, and cell phone are all useful. Then of course you need clothing, sheets, towels, super basic office supplies (pens, pencils, paper, binders, maybe a stapler and post-its if you like), toothbrush, etc., basic medicine, and all that other stuff you might want over the course of a month. One month over the summer write down everything you need (like hairdryer, etc.) that you might want in college. A lot of stuff you can buy once you get here. A couple of things you might want: a blanket/towel for studying outside on the grass when it's sunny and a desk lamp. My desk lamp is this cheap like $10 thing from Staples with organizational components for office supplies. A desk lamp is necessary at night (or in the morning...) when your roommate is sleeping and you still need to study. Don't bring a microwave, etc. unless you happen to have one lying around and plan to drive up. You won't know who your roommate is until you get here, so you might as well see if he/she already brought one and if you want one go out and buy it.

Yeah... that should be it. To all the girls especially: you probably don't need everything you think you'll need. You probably won't wear a lot of the clothes you bring and you probably won't use even half the lotion, etc. you bring. So pack light, especially when it comes to like lotion and such.

I have Verizon because it's great off-campus and at home, and my family and boyfriend have it (so we talk free).

Its reception ON campus is okay. Usually works. Ocassionally will roam... not that often. However, I have had issues with reception on the first floor of dorms.

cingular is the best. friends i know that had sprint didn't do that well. verizon was even worse.

i'd say the th pc/mac is 50/50. i believe they did an actual survey to back that up...not 100% sure though. most people with pc's have dell, ibm, and hp. a lot of my friends with dell had problems. heard none about ibm or hp. i heard about a few problem with macs, but not that many.

laptop, bike. you actually don't need need a bike. but it makes traveling around campus sooo much faster. think, when it's 9:55 and you have a class @ 10, on a bike it'll take you 1 minute or so to get to most places on campus. but walking will take you 10-20 minutes for everything.

I was going to say that the comments of the poster who said first to dump verizon, second to get a bike, and third to get an apple, was right on. Then i realized that I am that poster. And I stand by my advice.

I heard from my Roho and her roomie that Cingular is absolutely the best. My sprint phone worked fine all admit weekend, including in the obscure areas I got lost in.
