I was admitted to Florida State University back in November, and I am highly considering attending.

1) I applied for summer session and was accepted. However, on second thought, I would prefer to enroll in the fall. Is there any way to be considered for a switch of entrance term?

2) I applied for housing right away, and got a great priority number...#118 I believe it is. Therefore, I'm assuming I should have a choice of dorm with very little problem.

I may be eligible for the honors program, and I may not be. Still depends. I need to raise my SAT by 10 points (10 points only!). But even then...do you think I should apply for Landis? Or what about Gilchrist (a non-honors dorm starting in 2007) or Broward?

Or...what about Wildwood, the brand new hall? Does anyone know how quickly that's being put up, or if the hype says its gonna be pretty good?

3) How's the economics program? What is their "applied economics" major like?

Thanks!

on ur acceptance page wen u click a link it asks if you would like to be judged for another term...so i guess choose that one.( This applies if you applied for fall and recieved summer without wanting it) However, from what i have heard summer is a great experience, gives you a head start etc etc. I am doing it. Now, as i understand you choose Summer so i dont think you , can switch. But im not positive...because you have been accepted for summer.
im not doing honors and i applied for the honors dorm, Degraff, Landis and I Believe Broward. They should def. give you one of your choices AND def. bring up ur score if you are merely 10 points away.
Wilwood the new dorm i have heard is going to be great because its BRAND NEW DORM. So, it would be a nice choice 1st yr.
As for economics i have no idea im not majoring it in ....sorry.

The first two years there is very little difference between business intent and pre-economics. Business requires MAC2233 (calculus) and Economics does not. Business requires a higher GPA 2.9 vs 2.5. If you decide to do Economics, the major difference with applied is that you are required to take more accounting ACG2021/finance FIN3403 type courses so it is closer to a business degree. The economics major is supposed to be for people who want to go on to law or graduate school. The applied economics degree is for people who might want to work right after completing their undergraduate degree. In both cases you have to declare a minor for 12-18 credits.

I have to say that the freshmen/sophomore pre-economics advisor Shanna Autry is FANTASTIC! She keeps the students very informed of upcoming events they need to take care of and she provides lot of office hours for advising. Last Fall, my son's microeconomics class had a guest speaker, John Stossel visit them. The classes use modern technology of APLIA and PRS transmitters for much of the course work. The College of Social Sciences has a speaker forum http://www.coss.fsu.edu/events/ which you may find most interesting.

Landis is newly renovated...Gilchrist has been renovated in the recent past. Both are nice and in the middle of east campus.

During some home football games some (a bunch, really) members of the Marching Chiefs walk around campus and play. It is very exciting, according to my kids who live on campus.

Thank you to everyone for your responses already. I didn't expect such quick responses!

Does anyone know if Wildwood and DeGraff will be a dorm with the majority of students being freshmen?

It is hard to know for sure... but there are no single rooms in the new Wildwood or DeGraff dorms so I would imagine many upperclass students would want to move into single rooms, apartment style dorms or off campus. Each of these dorms are large and will hold 700 students in suite style doubles. Neither dorm requires the purchase of a meal plan. DeGraff is across Tennessee St from the main campus which is very busy.

Of the two new dorms, Wildwood and DeGraff, which one is more conveniently located to everything essential?

DeGraff is at the intersection of Dewey and Tennessee Streets. DeGraff will house the Social Sciences and Public Affairs Living Learning community that was previously in Cawthon.

Wildwood is at the corner of Wildwood and Jefferson and to the west of the Student Life Building and the New Hall Apartments. Wildwood will house the College of Nursing living learning community and the Social Justice living learning community which will each take up 40 spots.

This is the link to the campus map: http://www.fsu.edu/Campus/newmap/
DeGraff is closer to the student union, library, business and social sciences buildings.
Wildwood is closer to the stadiums, gym, Leach rec center, and student life center.
Neither dorm is near Fresh Food Company or Suwanee Room so I guess that is why they don't make you buy a meal plan.

Degraff is far away from everything except the bio building across the street, and the bars on TN street...I can't remember how many times i saw people trying to get across the street in the pouring rain...although I think they put a tunnel in...it always seemed to be way off the beaten path and out of the social loop, IMHO

yes you can switch terms, i did, i went from summer to fall, then changed my mind back to summer, hehe.

Thanks to all so far.

So, is the general consensus to try the Landis/Broward/Gilchrist path before trying for Wildwood/Degraff?

If you make Honors, that's fine (honors = Landis). If you don't make Honors, it's still fine. There really aren't any poor choices in your list.

Personally, as a freshman, being in the middle of things on the east campus is preferable. That way, on your birthday your roommates won't have to drag you so far to throw you into the Westcott fountain, which is a time-honored tradition at Florida State.
