A few questions

Hi everyone! My mom and I had a few questions about UNC; I’m not sure if the information’s been released yet, but I figured it was worth a shot to see if you guys knew.

When is the OOS orientation date? Do OOS students have to do that CTOPS thing (which I’m still a bit confused about)?

When is the dorm move-in date?

When do notices about financial aid packages go out?

Are National Merit Finalists guaranteed some sort of scholarship?

How exactly do I go about applying for housing? My friend thought she’d secured housing at the Ram Village, but it turns out that freshmen can’t claim housing there, so I have to go back to housing in regular dorms.

UNC is my top choice and I’ve already accepted the admission (not sure if that was a wise choice now, looking at all the other posts), but my parents have been bugging me about the cost, and I know that UNC is notorious for not being all too generous with OOS students.

Thanks in advance for your help!

S.Q. Lu:

(2) Dorm move-in dates will be mailed to you with your housing information.

(4) NMF scholarship information is on the UNC website, under student aid (see below). You did need to name UNC-CH (with National Merit Foundation) as your first choice school. If you didn't do that, it may be too late at this point, though I'm not sure.

(5) Once you've submitted your acceptance and paid a housing deposit, you should be sent information about housing.

Hope that helps; not sure about your other questions.

Will I receive special consideration for an merit-based scholarship if I am a National Merit finalist?
No. Though some universities use National Merit semi-finalist and finalist status as a means of recruiting scholars, UNC-Chapel Hill does not. We do offer the renewable College-Sponsored National Merit Awards of $1,000 or $2,000 described on the Merit-Based Scholarships page of this website.

(1) The more OOS-oriented CTOPS is right before move-in. The first day of classes is August 19th next fall so I'm assuming that CTOPS would start maybe on the 14th or so? However, you can go to whatever CTOPS you want. I'm an OOSer and went during July.

(2) Once again, first day of classes is August 19th, so probably a few days before then.

(3 & 4) I have no idea, my mom's an accountant so she's handled all that stuff for me haha

(5) housing.unc.edu

S.Q. Lu, you will get housing as a freshman, don't be afraid that you won't! It's a very easy process. You just have to put down your four top community choices and you'll get one of the four, if not the first.

i'd goto an earlier ctops if i were you. i went to hte last one this past year and basically all the classes were full. the oos oriented stuff didnt really help anyways

When is the OOS orientation date? Do OOS students have to do that CTOPS thing (which I'm still a bit confused about)? Yes you have to go to ctops and you can either pick a time to come or come the last session which will allow one trip vs. two. However, if you want to do freshman camp or the apple servcie project you can't do the last ctops but would need to come another time in the summer.

When is the dorm move-in date?
Usually about 5 days before classes start....and if you do the freshman camp usually a few days earlier than that.

When do notices about financial aid packages go out?
If you are a freshman then they go out in March I believe or early April.

Are National Merit Finalists guaranteed some sort of scholarship?
Yes, you will get up to $2000 depending on your financial status and you select them as your first choice school in a timely manner.

How exactly do I go about applying for housing? My friend thought she'd secured housing at the Ram Village, but it turns out that freshmen can't claim housing there, so I have to go back to housing in regular dorms.
Once you pay your deposit, I believe an icon will appear for housing so that you can register for housing. However....it may be after current students recontract which is this week through march 2. Freshman cannot get Rams village it is for upper classmen.
My advice is to find a room mate through the roommate finder if they have it still or the facebook program....pot luck does not always work well and make sure you are on the same page with the "partying" and the bed times....and boyfriend issues. Will make life soooo much easier.

To all of you. Do not panic if you go to CTOPS and classes are full. Work out the best schedule you can then you can with diligence get what you want in Drop/add right before classes start. They only open a few slots of each class for each session of ctops. most want to go early to get those laptops!!!

P.S. Just so you don't haul everything to NC--there is a Walmart, a Target, an LNT, pretty much anything you need will be there for you to get on the east coast.
