A few questions...

Hey guys, I'm interested in applying to Middlebury so I was wondering if anyone could give me some insights into this school...

1) How is the Spanish/Latin American studies major there?
2) How is the weather/surrounding area like at Middlebury?
I'm a California girl, and I've never been to Vermont... though I assume it's cold there. Is it suburban? Is there easy access to shops/airport... a mall around?
3) Is it mostly Caucasian? Is it very cliquey there?
4) Is it hard to get in?

That's about it... any help would be appreciated, thanks! :)

2) The surrounding area is very peaceful and bucolic. It sometimes smells like cows. The weather is good, from an Alaskan's point of view. It's not really suburban, but the town of Middlebury is very nice, if expensive.
3) It is almost entirely caucasian. I'm not sure about cliquey.
4) It's chancy, but not particularly hard to get in.

I'm not a current student, so someone else might answer these questions better. I was accepted, and Middlebury was my first choice until I lost my mind around the May 2nd deadline.

Best of luck getting your questions answered!

I was admitted and visited Midd. It's not suburban at all - it's very rural. The town was nice, but a small rural town nonetheless. It takes about and hour to get to Burlington, which is where the mall and airport is. I don't know where in CA you're from, but if you live near San Diego, LA, or San Francisco, Burlington will appear pretty tiny for a city. It was ultimately the location that made me decide to attend another school.

Middlebury has a very developed study abroad program. Although I am an entering student, I have seen that they have a variety of exchange programs with Latin America with a choice of campuses notably in Mexico and Brazil. Check their site.

So...Kiwi Strawberry...where'd you enroll?

And I do believe that Middlebury is on the more selective side amongst the liberal arts schools so I'm sure it's pretty hard to get in. I think the acceptance rate is around the late 20-early 30%, which while not in the Harvard/Princeton/Yale/Stanford range is still pretty low.

Acceptance rate I believe is 23% Average SAT is 1430 (class of 2008).
This year also 23%.

Wow...23%...that's pretty amazing. And I know for a fact that the avg SAT score of Middlebury is higher than that of other higher ranked (US News stats) liberal arts colleges. So it really isnt easy to get in. Now that makes me feel a lot better.

Er...Yale.

I know...I know.

Yeah, Middlebury is definitely selective, but I don't think it's as seemingly random as other schools in the same range. It's not quite the crap shoot with "building a class" that, say, Williams or Carleton might be. If you look at the class profile, it's rather narrow compared to similar schools, with a thinner range of test scores and GPAs. Also, it seems that every other person is the captain of some varsity team. The point I'm intending to make is that the class might be a little more homogenous than at other schools, and a student that fits the profile might be more likely to get in than the 23% acceptance rate would suggest.

But then, this is just my impression, so don't take it too seriously. I have a tendency to be way off-track.

thanks everyone for replying!! i've particularly enjoyed reading about the comments on location, cuz i don't think i'll be able to visit middlebury!!

i've never lived in a place that's snowed before... is it like FREEZING cold over there in Vermont?

and i really wanna go somewhere that's strong in spanish/latin american studies... but then again, i prefer going somewhere that's located near a city/malls lol... would middlebury not exactly fit that criteria?

the acceptance rate is scaring me!!

Well look...I have obviously not visited the campus (I'm about 8000 miles away) but I have a very good friend (who will now be a soph) who has told me great things about the school. And I do know that Midd has a GREAT reputation for intl studies and foreign lang. I actually think that it's one of the best in the country for these subjects.
I also have heard that Midd is not just a study school, while people do study extremely hard, they also play and party just as much.
As to your questions:
weather...uhhhhm! I guess kiwi answered it pretty well. I have lived all my life in Asia (with a brief stint in Holland) where temps seldom go below 30C (85F or so)...I have a bad feeling that I'm gonna turn into a popsicle!
Of all the comments I have heard about Middlebury, only two topics have brought out a negative stream of invective...weather and location. But...to put a positive spin on it (I'm one of those cup-half-full kind of people) you can practice your snowboarding!

Kiwi_Strawberry: No comment...you must be a genius! My cousin is in his 3rd year at Yale...he seems to like the place quite a bit...though, and he'd probably get massacred for saying this in connecticut...he went to Harvard to visit his girlfriend (smart couple huh?!) and he likes the dorms/food/facilities a lot more than Yale. But Yale...wow!

btw...kiwi and strawberry are my 2 favorite fruits!

lol oxymoron... congrats to getting to middlebury!! hopefully you can tell us (me) more about it come september!! and burma sounds like a cool country, never been there... :P

btw what are you gonna study there?

If you wanna read about Burma just check out one or two of the other thread on the Midd CC page (Ithink the thread started by iqq). I've written about Burma...you should really go read it.
I'm planning on doing a double major in:
1)Economics & Intl Politics
2)Math
Yup...I'll still be a CCer come September and hopefully I'll be able to help people the way others helped me!

Soooooo...that sounded corny!
Anywayz...let's chat. Where are you from bummer?

Oooooops...sorry! You already said you were from California. Anyhoo...I'm Akshay...nice to cyber-meet you bummer (aka ?)
Hope you make it to Middlebury...I'll be there to welcome you next September!

You know what sucks?! All of you live in the same/similar time zones so you're all online at the same time. But I live across the world and I'm only online while all of you are asleep! Darn!

lol don't worry oxymoron... i'm in hong kong right now, so i'm in same time zone as you i think!!! :D:D

and yay i'm so glad you'll still be a cc-er... i wish i came to this site like in eighth grade so i wouldn't be as screwed up as i am now!! :(

anyway your major sounds cool... and you're DOUBLING too!! so smart!!!

well actually you're like 1.5 hrs ahead...but that's cool! So...did you read what I wrote about Burma?

Wow...HK's really nice...I'd gone there to visit a very very good friend of mine last summer. Her dad practically owns half of Kowloon...he even has the 16th largest yacht in Asia. He's supposed to be a "businessman"...but he's really a drug-dealer!
But it's prett close to Burma...you should come on vacation!

hey... well i read your posts, burma sounds like an interesting place!!! are you from there, or are your parents diplomats for another country?? and your hk friend sounds riiiiiiiich!!! lol :P
