A freshman with questions

1.I am starting to buy clothes and I am wondering whether I will need something formal. Like are there any events that I would have to wear a dress or anything?

2.Also I am staying in Porter and I want to know if there are any mirrors in the dorms or do I have to bring my own?

3.I decided to take a sailing class at UCSC in order to keep myself busy. Does anyone know how the class is? Or If I should buy anything for the class before I drive over there. I am really far away.

My move in day is the 18th from 8am to 3. So I could choose whatever time I want to go? Or do I have to be there right at 8?

I probably will have more questions lol. But that is it for now.

You’re a freshman staying in Porter? That’s kinda interesting, all the transfer students are in Porter so you’ll probably have some older friends. At least it’ll be easy for you to find booze.

^There’s a different building for the frosh. I think transfers are staying in building A.

Also, to answer the questions.

I don’t think formal is necessary, but you might consider business casual in the event you have to do a presentation for one of your classes.

Not sure about mirrors, if there are any they might be on the inside door of the wardrobe. I don’t recall seeing any when I took the tour.

Your guess is as good as mine.

I’m assuming you come anytime between 8 and 3, but there’s still a couple weeks for them to contact you with the correct information.

Not really, but there are some formal dances or occasions where it would be helpful. It really depends on what you get involved with. If you plan on going to any of the career fairs, then having something business casual might be beneficial.

I don’t remember.

I remember some guy in my econ class who took a sailing class, but I think they tell you about the stuff on the first day.

That’s basically your time window. Once you sign up and get your keys, they will assign you a time within that time range. So if you go a little before 8 am, your move in time would probably be around 8ish till 9. If you came later and it becomes more crowded, then it will probably be pushed closer to 3.

I never worn formal clothes so far but there may be events where you may need them. It depends on what you get involved in like MidnightGolfer said. I say just bring business casual.

I’m not at Porter so I don’t know. However at my dorms we had a mirror on the back of the door and at College 9/10 I think they do too so maybe it is universal.

Can’t answer that

I can’t remember from last year but I think you can choose what time you want from that time slot. You basically get there in between those two times and wait until there’s room and then move in. I moved in pretty early so it wasn’t all that crowded but I guess if you move in later it will be so it really depends.

Depends on what you choose to go to. Personally, I never had any real use for formal clothes.

NO, Porter does not provide mirrors in the dorm rooms.

N/A

You arrive any time between 8 AM and 3 PM. What happens is when you arrive on campus:
There will be tons of signs guiding you where to go. There will most likely be people outside guiding you along the way as well. Eventually you end up in the Porter parking lot, where you are given a pass to park for a specified amount of time. You unload everything, and near the entrance to the buildings, you will be given your ID card (if you took your picture at orientation), which is also your room key. They will also give you your mailbox #, room number, room access code #, and a bunch of papers on how to set up internet and stuff like that. Once the parking permit expires, if your parents (or whoever brought you) want to stay to help you unpack and say goodbye, they will probably have to move their car to a different parking lot (I can’t remember which one, I didn’t physically park the car).
They might be doing it differently this year because there won’t be construction and the quad should be more or less open, but that’s the general idea of it. You park, unload, get everything you need, and go up to your room and unpack everything. Then you say your goodbyes and you are officially a college student!

I’ve never needed any formal attire at UCSC. We’re all freakin hippies anyway. However, you certainly may, depending on what you’re interested in, because the opportunity may arise.

The sailing class!

The sailing class is sweet. I’d rank it 2nd best only to the surfing class, which is another MUST. You’ll forget it has anything to do with college, except that you should at least show up most of the time. It’s great to get out there in the bay on a sunny morning and look back at the coast… it’s BEAUTIFUL. Pretty brag-worthy.

The first day they’ll tell you everything you need, but as I recall you still have to go all the way down there. Getting there from campus without a car is a pain in the ass. If you’re lucky someone will willingly carpool down there, but don’t count on it. There are two buses you can take down there; one from campus to the Metro and the 68 (I think) that goes pretty close by. However, it rarely comes at a convenient time, so you’ll probably have to bike over.

There are two different instructors… they’re both great. Both classes are fun, and if you have it with Rusty the class will be a little more serious and you’ll probably learn a little bit more. The other guy (forgot his name) is older but is awesome and a complete goofball, and his class is super laid-back.

well the first class meeting is at the east field house or something like that.
Ahh now I have no idea how I am going to the off campus location on other days because I am not taking a bike =/
But I’m glad that the class sounds fun :)

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that… (been awhile!) yeah, it is there.
Check out the bus schedules because it’s worth going to do at least once. If it’s too inconvenient you can still drop it.

oh ok…well I have no classes that day so I’ll see if I can figure something out.

There are no full length mirrors in the Porter dorms if that’s what you mean. Only the regular mirrors in the bathrooms. I got a full length one from Target for 4.99 and it was just fine. Ah, move in day. I advise getting there early. The parking lot stayed full all day, it never seemed like it let up. And you will be amazed at how much crap people bring. I’m only bringing half that amount this year. There is a parking lot by the art buildings that you can park in all day after you drop your stuff off. Oh, and you’d better hope the elevators are working this year…just sayin…

For full-length mirrors, what’s the best way to hang them? I have one with an attachment to hang over the door. Is that okay? Or is there some other way I should put it?
