Just trying to get my head around calculating the UC gpa, and I see that they only consider grades from 10th - 11th grade. What happens if your child fulfils the visual and performing arts category for example, in 9th grade? How does that get taken into consideration?
Thanks
The UCs will see that your child filled the requirement (through official transcript and self reporting) but it will not be counted in the GPA.
OK thanks. And am I right in thinking you can only appy 8 extra points for UC honors courses and of those 8 you are only allowed up to 4 extra points in 10th grade?
(Just making sure I’m following the instructions properly!)
If you are a CA resident, then you can check your HS’s UC approved Honors course list on this link. Not all HS courses labeled “honors” are UC approved for the extra points. The capped weighted UC GPA is based on 8 semesters of extra honors points and only 4 semesters for 10th grade. The fully weighted UC GPA (used by UCLA/UCB) is an unlimited # of extra honors points for 10-11th grades.

If you are not a CA resident, then only AP or IB classes taken 10-11th grades are eligible for the extra Honors points.
@Gumbymom - thank you. Yes, we are CA resident - I did not know that UCLA has an unlimited # of extra honors points - that’s interesting, thank you. I used the HS’s UC approved honors course list and when I calculated my daughter’s capped weighted UC GPA she was coming out at 4.30, but I had left off some of her honors points as they exceed 8.
I think I’ll do UCLA/UCB calculation as well now that I know that for comparison.
UCLA/UCB are the only 2 UC’s that state they use the Fully weighted (unlimited Honors points) for their application review. Some of the other UC’s may also consider it, but do not state it anywhere on their application review.
https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/ will show all three variants of UC recalculated HS GPA: unweighted, weighted-capped, and fully-weighted. All variants should be visible to UC admission readers. Most UC information referencing HS GPA refers to the weighted-capped version, unless otherwise specified (e.g. on some UCLA pages which specifically refer to the unweighted and fully-weighted versions).
Note that HS GPA for CSU purposes is like the UC weighted-capped HS GPA.
@ucbalumnus well that isn’t the calculator I used, but when I put the information into the one you provided, I got the same result so hopefully I’ve done it correctly!
Unweighted: 4.0
Weighted: 4.46
Weighted and capped: 4.31
I’m not sure how they do the rounding though. I thought I read somewhere that they don’t use decimals? Or am I wrong on that one?
