Do you have to meet them? Like what happens if you have a couple of D's and everything. Does that automatically deny you. I have a 2.27 10-11 GPA right now and I'm about to raise it to a 2.5 or 2.7 without making up those D's. I saw that Index thing and if you have a 2.5 or 2.7 you don't even need a high score for those GPA's. I'm really worried I will get denied by every school because I got D's in AP Euro, Honors English 2, and Geometry.

It ultimately depends on what the requirements are for the school you’re applying for.

But what my counselor said is you still have a chance to get into a fairly good college as long as you explain to them somewhere on the application why you got a grade below C. Whether it be you had a family issue that year or you were trying to challenge yourself with a harder subject.

Either way, I wouldn’t rely on that and just try to make up the D’s (or get a high, if not perfect, SAT Reasoning/Subject and ACT score)

I’m applying to CSU’s. And yeah I was trying to challenge myself with AP and HP classes and I couldn’t take it. They wouldn’t let me switch out. And I always been bad at math. Sophmore years I had a 2.17 and 2.6. This year I have a 3.33 and plan on getting a 4.0 as a Junior. I don’t know if I can make up 6 D’s before Junior year ends.

You mean for California State Universities?

Only courses completed with C grades or higher can count toward fulfilling the a-g requirements for CSUs – see [CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - High School Subject Requirements](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Freshman: Admission Requirements | CSU) , http://www.calstate.edu/sas/publications/documents/csu-uc-a-gcomparisonmatrix.pdf , and http://www.calstate.edu/SAS/publications/documents/AdmissionHandbook.pdf .

See page 5 of the CSU Admission Handbook to see what you can use to substitute for the courses you got D grades in. The CSU-UC comparison matrix indicates that a C grade or higher in trigonometry or precalculus can validate the geometry that you got a D grade in.

Well yes; that is why they are called requirements

…

And meeting the requirements means passing the class. A “D” is not passing and must be made up.

Four years of English are required with a C or better.

Three years of math (including Geom and Alg II) are required with a C or better.

If you do you retake required a-g courses in which you received a D and pass with a higher score, you are ineligible for Cal State. Thus, auto rejection.

Note, you can also retake in the summer after Junior year of HS.
