I am a senior at in High School in Florida. I plan to apply to UC Berkeley for the 2011 Fall semester.

I have started my application, though I have not come very close to completing it as of yet. I recently watched several of Berkeley's Webinar's and was somewhat confused by their discussion of "A-G Course Requirements", so I looked at the requirements and found that I fulfill all except for one; my high school only requires a semester of Art, so I am currently taking an introductory art class that will last for this semester. According to what I could find, Berkeley, and all the UCs for that matter, requires 1 unit (1 year?) of art.

Next semester I had hoped to take a Directed Individual Study of AP Macroeconomics, but if I must complete another semester of art in order to apply to UC Berkeley, I will have to take Introduction to Art 2, the only second semester Art class that my school offers, which, from what I have heard, is virtually a repeat of this semester. Is this what I have to do in order to be eligible, or is there some extracurricular I could do, or some other means of fulfilling this requirement and obtaining UC eligibility?

I have a friend who apparently says she knows a guy who definitely didn't have two semesters of art that got accepted, but I just don't know.

Does anyone know if this really is required in order to be accepted, or know of someone I could contact to find out more?

Yes, you need one full year of a VAPA course to be minimally eligible to apply to UC. The second semester needs to be a second semester of a year-long course, not a repeat of semester 1.

Alternatively, you could qualify for admissions by testing alone, which requires an average of 710 (if I recall).

That was my understanding, and they mentioned an option in general by which one might test to avoid this requirement, but I don’t know of any art test except for AP’s. A 710 in what?

Also, Intro to Art 2 isn’t the same class, though I won’t claim that they are drastically different. Would that suffice? Its possible that I could get moved up to a year long course because the teacher seems to think I am able. Would it be better to do this rather than take the second semester of intro?

tests = SAT/ACT + two subject tests. OOS needs 425 points.

Art 2 would probably work, but it would be best if you e-mailed your question to a couple of UC campuses since UC is pretty picky about VAPA.

Thank you for that link, it was very helpful. My scores on the SAT so far (I am going to get new subject test scores tomorrow, and I’m signed up to take the November SAT one final time) are an 800 in Critical Reading, a 760 in Writing, a 710 in Math, a 670 in US History, and a 710 in Biology. I believe this totals out to 441 based on the link. However, what does this mean? None of these tests are in any way related to VAPA; does that not matter? Can I get in for having high enough scores even if I don’t fulfill the A-G requirements? Also, if that is the case, do I have to note it somewhere on my application?

Also, thank you for your help bluebayou. I really appreciate it; the college application process is quite stressful and its nice to be able to get a straight answer about things.
