A girl from Delhi needs help

1360/2400 and in? Really?

Yup. Maths was 650. Go figure.

Oh and most of these guys drop outta engineering after frosh year. The workload is intense. So be prepared to really really work your ass off especially if your taking EE which is one of the toughest fields.

And those uni’s are good for engineering. 'Cuz no half brained idiot can graduate
The course is rigorous and if you complete it, it means something. That’s why they’re known as good engineering colleges.

Wow. How easy are these places to get into if you have the moolah!?

^ Purdue’s pretty easy.
Drexel too. Infact Drexel dishes out scholarships like ANYTHING, Agreed they’re not full rides, but 50-60% isn’t less.

UIUC till 5 years back was easy too. Only this year a couple of guys from my school considered it a safety and applied (SAT scores 1850ish) and got rejected :p

And pardon me for sounding* biased* but the general rule is that if you have the moolah, you ain’t surviving engineering. Especially if you’ve been slacking in hs (first hand experience)
Of course there are exceptions. I know kids who are unbelievably rich and still top their schools and then get into Ivy’s

Exceptions to every rule.

@prateek: Is that so…I mean about Drexel…and their scholarships procedure…I guess I need to pick that up in my list

^ Yeah. But come one, if you won’t get in a univ abroad you’ll get into much better univ here in India with your record. So unless you like have to go abroad, don’t apply.

Drexel’s in Philly, right?

nods

10char

Not that I’m applying…

alrighty! here’s what i have to say- haven’t read the whole 4 page discussion and if people disagree- please refrain from going oh-you-think-she’ll-get-into-this-“top”-college-so-you’re-dumb-bwahaha thing! :)

right. first off, why do i think i’ve seen you on these forums earlier? brownie??

second- here’re the colleges i think you should consider.

Penn State
(good college- BUT easy for internationals… why do i say that? because i have friends who FAILED 11th grade and got in there as internationals. the not-so-top colleges ACTUALLY prefer internationals (especially with all the economic blow-up!)

Milwaukee School of Engineering
(again… same thing. i know people who’re going there. it has a ~75% acceptance rate, loves internationals- gives no aid whatsoever and is pretty specialized. why do people not know about it? because it is a non-doctorate school. it does, however, place in the top 10 of the non-doctorate schools for engineering in the US)

Purdue
(great engineering program. well, at least it’s high-ranked… and i do not know a SINGLE person who got the no-go from purdue. again, a 75%ish acceptance rate)

UC Merced and UC Riverside
(okay… these schools are probably the not-so-amazing UCs (i’m just trying not to call them the worst UCs) and they are in trouble. there have been talks of shutting down these to push up UCLA, Berkeley and UCSD (the top UCs) even higher up. so yeah… but then, the UCs are a pretty prestigious system- especially here in the west. and as a UC student, you have a slightly higher chance of being able to transfer to UCLA/berkeley after your sophomore year (2nd year). so yeah… plus, if you want and if it makes you happier, UCLA and berkeley and UCSD have the same app, so you could apply to those as well- but i am pretty sure (sorry, being harshly honest here) they’re pretty much impossible… so yeah… if you DO apply, do bear in mind that they are in trouble- but apart from the financial thing and the talks of closing them down… they have a decent reputation AND there is that chance of transferring! i’m getting a bit repetitive here- but you should ignore that!) haha!

Michigan Technological University
(75%ish acceptance rate and a decent engineering program… and from what i’ve heard they give you plenty of opportunities to pimp your resume… research etc. etc.)

University of Kansas
(a whopping 90%+ acceptance rate… decent education… even ranks top 5 in the country in some departments (if you consider changing your major- and people do that. haha! on an average, a UCLA student changes majors like 2.7 times!!) so yeah! the engineering program’s pretty decent too)

Virginia Tech
(decent school… i’m not too sure but i think it’s a 60-70% acceptance rate- but from what i’ve heard (don’t quote me on this) it’s not very hot with internationals ever since the whole virginia tech massacre thing- so i’m guessing there’s a higher chance for you! :))

Drexel Univeristy
(again, high acceptance rate (70ish percent), decent (top 50) engineering program and decently well known in india… i know 3-4 people who applied there- so yup! don’t really know TOO much about it, tbh)

Georgia Institute of Technology
(it’s around a 60% acceptance rate- it’s a well-known college for engineering- it’s got the rankings and the prestige- and i dunno why- but i think you have a fair shot :))

uMichigan and UIUC
(well, these are schools that are pretty much “up there” but then again, they have relatively high acceptance rate. these would be the “reach” schools for you, i guess- personally, i don’t know anyone who didn’t get into either of them- one guy from my school got waitlisted at uMich last year- but he finally made it off the waitlist- so yeah!)

yup… that’s all i could think of right now… i’ll add more if i can later… (don’t bump and PM and stalk me like the brownie person :stuck_out_tongue: :P) oh- and if you’re super-rich, do apply to UCLA!! HAHAH! we’d like to maintain our “most popular school in the country” status (which basically means we had the highest number of applicants!) haha! (c’mon! don’t burn me down for this… i’m bored… and i have UCLA bruin pride! ;)) alright. i should shut up now!

^ UMich and UIUC?!?!

Dude, I know lots of people who didn’t get in. UIUC was Purdue-ish.
And Mich is a decent state school. Definitively not a anyone can get in school.

Apart from those and Ga/V Tech I don’t know much so I can’t flame you.
Sorry :P

Firstly thanks a lot Prateek , tetris and Tuna.

@tuna - What brownie ?? :S
Thanks a lot for the suggestions , I will look into the schools you have mentioned . My list is so far :-
1)Purdue
2)Georgia tech
3)Cal Poly SLO
4)UIUC
5)UMichigan
6)MNSU - Mankato (legacy , mom … forced to apply here)
7)Drexel
8)Arizona state university
9)UKansas

Thanks a lot and feel free to add or edit my list

Tuna - My dream school is Berkley followed closely by Stanford and UMichigan , I have a few seniors in UCLA 2013 . Best of luck with UCLA , its an amazing school and hope you excel over there.

Thanks all of you

I guess UMichigan would be tough…

ummmm who told u cal poly SLO? that might get kinda hard. Trust me, i would know.

^^ is it really hard for me to get in ?? . One of the CC people only recommended it to me . Shpould I remove it from my list /

The thing is they dont even look at your extra curriculars. There is no space on the application to write about them. Therefore your acceptance is only based on your highest SAT score as well as your weighted 10th-11th grade GPA. Yes freshman year is not taken into consideration. Cal Poly SLO has a 33% acceptance rate.Weighing all these aspects, I believe the person who recommended Cal Poly SLO to you must have some incorrect info.

If you are able to, you might want to try the ACT. Some people do better on one test over the other (not that th ACT is EASIER than the SAT, but it is different).

acha tell me yaar which colleges look at extracirriculars the most…
